NAILERS WEEK IN REVIEW
October 30-November 6
Friday, November 3 Wheeling 2 @ Reading 5
The Wheeling Nailers lost 5-2 to the Reading Royals Friday night at the Soveriegn Center. Reading managed two power-play goals in the final seven minutes of the third period to secure the win. It was the first meeting between the two teams since the Nailers eliminated the Royals from the playoffs in the North Division Semi-finals last April. Wheeling opened the scoring at the 12:36 mark of the first period when Sean Collins notched his third goal of the season with the Nailers on a two-man advantage. That would be the only goal of the opening period. Chris Bala's goal just 25 seconds into the second period sparked three unanswered goals for the Royals in the frame. Bo Cheesman found Joe Jensen to cut the Royals lead to one 8:24 into the final period but penalties cost the Nailers late. With 8:08 to go and Mat Goody in the box serving a double-minor, the Royals scored two power-play goals for a 5-2 win.
Saturday, November 4 Wheeling 2 @ Johnstown 5
Despite the Nailers posting, then a season high, 37 shots against Gerald Coleman, the Johnstown Chiefs scored twice in the final period to win 5-2. Only four of those 37 shots came in the third period. Sean Collins scored his fourth goal of the year just 32 seconds into the game to give the Nailers a brief 1-0 lead. Gus Katsuras tied the game just 30 seconds later for the Chiefs. The Chiefs would score the next two goals as well, both on the power play, taking a 3-1 lead late into the second. At the 15:25 mark, Kurits McLean scored from Sean Collins and Joe Jensen on the power play to pull the Nailers within one heading to the third. Wheeling failed to score while Johnstown got goals from Maxime Boisclair and Adam Henrich for the three-goal victory.
Sunday, November 5 Wheeling 4 vs. Johnstown 2
The Wheeling Nailers used two Kurtis McLean, third-period goals to beat the Johnstown Chiefs by a score of 4-2 at WesBanco Arena. McLean leads the team with six goals and 13 points. Johnstown drew first blood at the 8:39 mark of the first period on Randy Rowe's first of two goals in the game. Although the score was 1-0 Johnstown at the end of the first period, the shots were 14-13 Wheeling after one evenly matched period of play. Bo Cheesman tied the score with his first goal of the young season 6:00 into the second frame. Just 1:18 later the Nailers took their first lead of the game. Jordan Cameron found Jon Foster who banged home the pass for his first ECHL goal. Randy Rowe would answer right back for the Chiefs under a minute later. Just over three minutes into the final frame, Collins took a pass from Paul Bissonnette and slid it across to McLean who beat Morgan Cey with a wrist shot to the glove side. Then shorthanded, Collins caused a turnover and slid the puck to McLean for the insurance goal. The Nailers managed a season-high 45 shots on net while holding Johnstown to a third-period total of four, 28 on the game.
