Augusta Lynx News Release
Gwinnett County, GA - The Gladiators made a splash just 17 seconds into the game as Jamie Milam put away a two-on-one pass from Scott Mifsud to make it a 1-0 game, the period's only goal.
In the second Augusta would mimic the Gladiators with a quick tally to open the frame. J.B. Bittner scored his third goal of the year just 39 seconds in to tie the game at 1-1.
At the other end of the ice, a pair of stellar shorthanded stops from Dave McKee would spawn a break for Augusta as the Lynx went back down the sheet and earned a five-on-three advantage when Paul Flasche was nailed for tripping. On the ensuing faceoff Garrett Bembridge backhanded a puck over the left shoulder of Dan Turple to give the Lynx their first lead of the game at 2-1.
Back came Gwinnett with a power play goal of their own at 10:42 from Scott Lehman, as he redirected a Blue Bennefield shot past McKee to make it 2-2.
With just under 20 seconds remaining in the period, the Gladiators were in the middle of a power play breakout when the puck turned over at center ice. Jamie Johnson broke in on the left wing and fed a charging Sean Blanchard for a shorthanded goal with just 3.9 seconds remaining in the period, giving Augusta a dramatic 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Ryan Lang gave Augusta a two goal advantage at 9:12 with a shorthanded marker from Shane Hynes, the Lynx second of the game.
From there, Gwinnett chipped away at the lead. At 12:41 Brad Schell made it a 4-3 game, followed by a late power play goal with just 1:31 remaining from Jim Jackson that tied the game and sent it to overtime.
In OT, Augusta came by a power play but failed to score, pushing the contest into a shootout. It was there that the Lynx received goals from Jamie Johnson and Joe Cardarelli, while McKee stopped four of five shooters to ice the win for Augusta.
Augusta is right back to game action Tuesday night at 7:05 pm as they face the Inferno up in Columbia. The Classic Stucco and Stone Pre-Game Show kicks off one half-hour before faceoff on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
