It was Fun While it Lasted

On Thursday night, the Wheeling Nailers saw their 12-game point streak come to an end, as they fell 5-2 against the Elmira Jackals at WesBanco Arena. Elmira built a 4-0 lead around the midway mark of the second period, capped off by a pair of power play tallies, marking just the second time this season that Wheeling has surrendered multiple goals on the man advantage. During the streak, the Nailers were able to jump all the way to third place in the Eastern Conference Standings, while building an eight-point lead in the Atlantic Division. The 12-game point streak goes into the books as the third longest in team history.

They Don't Mind the Cold

The Florida Everblades will play their sixth game in the northern part of the country on Saturday night, after vacating Estero, which has a scheduled high of 83 degrees. Despite the drastic change in temperature, the Everblades have maintained a high level of play, posting a 4-1-0 record in that scenario, while running their road record against non-divisional opponents to 9-1-0. This week, Florida has begun its lone Atlantic Division swing of the campaign with back-to-back wins over Elmira and Reading, defeating the Jackals 2-1 on Wednesday, before a 4-1 triumph over the Royals on Friday.

A Rare Trip to Wheeling

For the first time in over a month, the Nailers will face a team that they have yet to do battle with this season, as the Everblades make their lone visit to the Ohio Valley. Despite the fact that this is Wheeling's 22nd season and Florida's 16th, the two sides have only collided 14 times in their histories, with the Everblades holding a 9-5 advantage. To make things even more rare, Saturday night marks just the fourth ever meeting between the Nailers and Everblades in Wheeling, as two of Wheeling's five home games in the all-time series were played in Johnstown, during the 2011-12 season.

A Double Sunburn

While a trip to the Sunshine State typically results in a fancy new tan, the Everblades have made a habit of leaving opposing goaltenders with quite the sunburn on the backs of their necks. Florida leads the ECHL with 86 goals scored this season, while also leading the way with a +29 goal differential. Forward Matthew Pistilli has been a major reason for that success, as he leads the league with 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists). Brandon MacLean has also been a large contributor in the early going, racking up 21 points, while leading the ECHL with a +20 rating. One final category with Florida on top is road victories, as the Everblades are 12-3-0 on enemy ice.

A String of Familiar Faces

In each of their next five games, the Nailers will see players on the opposite end of the ice that have formerly called Wheeling home. On Saturday night, it will be a pair of former Hamilton Bulldogs defensive prospects in Olivier Dame-Malka and Joe Stejskal. Dame-Malka is the more offensive minded blueliner, as he had seven goals and 18 points in 36 games with the Nailers during the 2011-12 campaign, and currently has three goals and six points in 17 games with Florida this season. Stejskal had four assists in 26 games with Wheeling last season, and is on a similar pace this season, with four assists and five points in 23 games with the Everblades.
