Nailers teach local students hockey skills

December 1, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

Wheeling Nailers players, Jason Jaffray and Armands Berzins appeared Tuesday at Sanford Elementary in Moundsville. The players were there working with the students in the after school program, teaching them some basic hockey skills.

The students were excited to be able to work closely with their favorite Nailers players. The players had the students gather in the gym where they showed them some stick handling moves and how to shoot a puck. The players also explained where they come from and how far away their homes in the off season are. Next they answered all the questions of the very smart elementary kids. After the players taught the students, they were given a chance to put their new skills to work in a scrimmage game against their classmates. The action was heated in the scrimmage, Jaffray scored his second hat trick of the week, beating the third grader who was standing in the pipes for the red team. Berzins also scored on the yellow team as it bounced off people in front for a goal.

At the end of the program the students had a great time and learned a few things about playing hockey, and how to handle a hockey stick. If your school would like the Nailers to come and visit please call (304)234-4625, and ask for Ryan Patrick to set up any visits.
