Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers had a night to forget on Saturday, as they saw multiple streaks come to harsh conclusions. The Reading Royals scored three times in the first, once in the second, and twice in the third for a 6-0 win in front of 3,498 at WesBanco Arena. The win was Reading's first in 11 games at Wheeling, and it also ended the Nailers' three-game winning streak, five-game point streak, and 68-game streak during the regular season of not being blanked by the opposition.

The Royals started the first period blazing hot, as the flew out to a 3-0 lead. The first goal came at the 2:33 mark, while Reading was playing on the man advantage. Yannick Tifu slid the puck into the middle of the slot for Mike Pereira, who quickly whipped a pass of his own to Robbie Czarnik inside the left circle. Czarnik was anticipating the pass, which he blistered in one-time fashion to the back of the net. The score stayed that way until 1:28 remained in the frame. Mike Marcou's right point shot was stopped, but the rebound was fished free by Pereira, who teed up a layup for Brandon Alderson. 53 seconds later, Reading added insurance when Todd Perry fired in a laser from the top of the left circle.

Reading added one goal to its lead in the third period, and it came from another lightning quick shot. Kevin Young drilled in a slap shot from the top of the right circle off of an offensive zone face-off win by Scott Tanski. Justin Crandall and Joey Sides tacked on two more for the visitors in the third period, giving the game a 6-0 final score.

Connor Knapp picked up the shutout win in goal for Reading, stopping all 34 shots he faced. Franky Palazzese suffered his first loss in four starts for Wheeling, allowing five goals on 25 shots, before giving way to Casey DeSmith, who made four saves on five shots in relief.

The Nailers will play their next six games on the road, beginning on Friday night against the Adirondack Thunder. The trip will take them through Manchester, Elmira, and Brampton as well. Wheeling will play three straight home games on February 26th, 27th, and 28th. On the 26th, The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas present Flat Screen Friday, and a Frosty Friday will also take place.
