Jackals Battle Back But Fall Late to Monarchs, 4-2
February 6, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals battled back from an early two-goal deficit to tie the game in the third period but were sunk by Matt Leitner's late game-winning goal. Allan McPherson and Tyler Currier scored for the Jackals and Cason Hohmann extended his point streak to eight games.
The Monarchs, donning pink jerseys and skating on pink ice for their Pink in the Rink game, gave the home crowd an early charge with the game's first goal just 33 seconds into the action. Danick Paquette and Matt Leitner worked below the goal line and Leitner was able to thread a pass into the slot to Alex Guptill for his 13th goal of the season. Later in the opening frame, Manchester doubled its lead on the power-play as Yann Sauve found space through the neutral zone and walked into the high slot ripping a shot past C.J. Motte for his sixth goal of the season unassisted.
The pesky pack regrouped in the second period and chipped away at Colin Stevens until Allan McPherson broke through at 16:29. Jacob MacDonald laid the puck ahead to Cason Hohmann who streamed down the right wing side and slid a perfect pass across the crease to Allan McPherson for his 11th goal of the season. Hohmann's helper extended his point streak to eight games. C.J. Motte stood tall turning aside all 14 shots faced in the middle frame.
Elmira entered the third period with momentum from the late second period goal and quickly evened the game. Garrett Klotz fed a pass from the right wing wall to the high slot where Tyler Currier gathered it and fired a shot past Stevens to knot the game at 2-2 5:14 into the third period. Currier's tying tally was his 14th goal of the season. However, the Monarchs struck back and regained their lead at 7:34 with Matt Leitner's 10th goal of the season. A rebound in front caused traffic in the crease and despite Motte getting his left pad over to make the initial stop the second effort of Leitner pushed the puck past Motte to regain the lead for good. Maxim Kitsyn added an empty-net goal assisted by Derek Arnold with 26 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the home team.
C.J. Motte turned aside 29 of 32 shots faced but suffered the loss. Colin Stevens stopped 27 of 29 shots faced to earn the win.
