Nailers Start Big Weekend with 4-2 Victory

The Nailers, looking to gain points in the North Division to stay in the playoff race, began their three game home weekend with a 4-2 victory against division leading Cincinnati.

It started well, only taking Wheeling 51 seconds to get the game's first goal. John Foster, on the first shift of the game, skated down the left wing and let loose a wrist shot from the left circle then beat goalie Cedric Desjardins through his five-hole to give the home team an early 1-0 lead. Adam Edinger had the only assist.

Jon Smyth got the Nailers' second goal at 8:27 of the first period for a 2-0 lead when he forced a shot under the pads of Desjardins. It was just Smyth's second goal to go along with his 18 assists on the season. Jordan Cameron was credited with an assist, as was Ryan Moren.

The first period ended with the Nailers leading 2-1.

The Cyclones, however, broke though just 49 seconds into the second period, cutting the lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal. Sam Ftorek blasted a slap shot from the point that beat Andy Franck.

The Cyclones tied the game at two with another power-play goal at 6:13 of the second. Corey Urquhart, positioned just to the right of Franck, was the recipient of a fortuitous rebound that he tapped in to the level the game.

The Nailers struck back just over a minute later when Eric Sonnenberg tipped a shot from Chris Brooks past Desjardins to give the Nailers a 3-2 lead.

The score remained 3-2 in favor of the home team going into the third period.

The Nailers sealed the game with 56 seconds remaining when Paul Bissonnette added an empty net goal. Cody Blanshan and Adam Edinger had assists on the goal The Nailers welcome second place Trenton into WesBanco Arena tomorrow night for an 8:00 p.m. start.
