Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Bakersfield, CA - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, faced the Bakersfield Condors, who had recently earned top spot in the Pacific Division, for the fifth time in 20 days,. Marc-Andre Bernier scored his sixth goal in the last seven games to give Victoria an edge in the third and they held on for the 4-3 victory.

It was on a Salmon Kings powerplay when Bakersfield opened the scoring. Defenseman David Kudelka threw the puck to the net from the right boards and it redirected off a Victoria defenseman and under Goaltender Bryan Bridges right pad for the Condors 1-0 lead at 6:20 into the first period.

Wes Goldie got Bakerfield's attention as he finished a series of Salmon Kings pressure with his 25th goal of the season. Goldie carried the puck from the left corner and banked a shot off Netminder Jamie Hodson to tie the game 1-1. Victoria grabbed the lead before the finish of the first, with 1:36 remaining, as newcomer Robin Gomez earned his first assist with the Salmon Kings and fed Kiel McLeod in the slot for his 19th goal of the season.

The Condors took advantage of a powerplay early in the second stanza to tie the game 2-2. Alex Kim scored his 7th goal of the season, deflecting a shot from Defenseman Tyler Scott. But on another Condors powerplay, Victoria regained the lead. The Krestanovich brothers combined for a shorthanded goal at 9:32 into the middle frame. Derek passed up to Jordan, and his shot from just inside the blueline dribbled past the glove of Hodson for the 3-2 Salmon Kings edge.

At 3:42 into the third period, Victoria increased their lead during a powerplay rush. Bernier grabbed a rebound from a Jordan Krestanovich shot off the back boards and tucked it past Hodson.

Kim scored his second goal of the night as the Condors inched within one at 9:21 into the final frame, but Bridges and the visiting Salmon Kings squad nested their lead and nabbed their second straight road win in California.

Final: 4-3 Salmon Kings

Bridges earned his sixth win of the season and Hodson was handed his fifth loss. Victoria went 1 for 5 on the powerplay and Bakersfield went 1 for 7 with the man advantage. The Condors outshot the Salmon Kings 36-28.

The Salmon Kings (16-26-0-1) get some quick shuteye before awaking to game two versus Bakersfield (24-12-0-4) tomorrow at 12 noon.
