Ice Pilots rally to stun Inferno 5-4 in overtime

COLUMBIA, SC -- David Wrigley fired a power play goal :38 seconds into overtime to lift the Pensacola Ice Pilots to a 5-4 victory over the Columbia Inferno on Friday night at Carolina, Coliseum.

It was the first overtime win of the season for the Ice Pilots after a loss back in November. It also marked the second time this season that the Ice Pilots rallied from a deficit after 40 minutes. Both wins have come against Columbia. Goaltender Michael Mole was outstanding in net stopping 46 of 50 shots he faced. It was the second win for Pensacola in Columbia this season, but their first of 2007 on the road.

The Ice Pilots rallied back from a 3-2 deficit in the third period thanks to the stick of Mike Wirll who scored two goals. His first on a great wrist shot form just inside the blue line. The second goal for Wirll came on a great second effort.

However, the Columbia Inferno forced overtime when they scored on the power play with under four minutes remaining in the third period. The Ice Pilots received a huge boost in overtime when just after the puck was dropped an Inferno player was called for a tripping penalty.

It was a great start to the game for the Ice Pilots. In the opening period the Ice Pilots jumped out to a 2-0 lead on two power play goals by Sergei Ogorodnikov. His first was set up by Rob Rankin and Nikita Korovkin at 5:24 and then less than 2 minutes later Ogorodnikov netted another from Nate Metcalf on a breakaway

The Columbia Inferno rallied back with three straight in a span of four minutes to take the lead after 20 minutes.

There was no scoring in the second period, but goaltender Michael Mole made some outstanding saves to keep the game close and his team within striking distance.

Notes: The Pensacola Ice Pilots will look to make it back-to-back wins tomorrow (Saturday) night when they take on the Columbia Inferno for a second straight time.
