Nailers Shut Down Beast 3-0
March 8, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release
WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA - The Brampton Beast played a gem of a defensive gameand kept the high-flying Wheeling Nailers at bay for most of the game but Nailers starter Franky Palazzese stymied the Beast's offensive opportunities as the Nailers topped the Beast 3-0 at WesBanco Arena on Tuesday night.
The Nailers opened the scoring late in the opening frame as Riley Brace used his speed to create a scoring chance on a partial breakaway and managed to slide the puck behind Beast starting goaltender Kenny Reiter at 17:01.
The Beast found themselves down a man early in the game as forward Stephon Thorne was the victim of a knee from Nailers forward John McCarron. Thorne was down on the ice in pain for several minutes, while McCarron was given a five-minute major and ejected from the game.
The Nailers continued to press into the second period and pushed the lead to 2-0 just under a minute into the frame. Kenny Reiter got a piece of a shot from Adam Krause but not enough to stop the puck from trickling over the line just 51 seconds into the period.
The Beast played a great defensive period in the second and consistently broke up odd-man rushes and high quality scoring chances. They held the Nailers to just six shots in the second period.
The Beast continued their tight defensive play in the third period, doing a great job limiting scoring chances as well as shots on goal. The Nailers were once again frustrated by the Beast defense as they were only able to put nine shots against Reiter in the final frame.
The Nailers were only able to squeeze one shot behind Reiter in the third period as Krause earned his second goal of the game on a nice passing play found five hole on Reiter just 31 seconds into the period.
The Beast found some energy late in the game and fired several high-quality shots against Palazzese, but the goalie stood tall to earn a 14-save shutout.
Notes: The Beast finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The Beast will now head home to the Powerade Centre to host the Toronto Maple Leafs' ECHL affiliate, the Orlando Solar Bears, starting on Thursday, March 10 at 7:15 PM. Single game tickets are now available, starting at $16.25.
