Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - Tuesday night, the Wheeling Nailers kept the game short and simple, as they faced the slumping Brampton Beast, to start a four-game homestand at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling scored once in each period, with Riley Brace tallying in the first and Adam Krause in the second and third, and Franky Palazzese needed just 14 saves for his fourth shutout of the year, as the Nailers bounced the Beast, 3-0.
Although neither team was able to convert on the man advantage during it, the first period was controlled by power plays, as the two teams combined to spend 11 of the 20 minutes on the penalty kill. Five of those minutes went to the Nailers, as John McCarron received a major for kneeing. Brampton not only failed to score, but also failed to record a shot on goal. Wheeling ultimately scored the lone marker of the stanza with 2:59 remaining. Mathew Maione sped a pass up the left side of the ice, leading Riley Brace into the offensive zone. Brace flew toward the net, and ended up sliding a shot through goaltender Kenny Reiter and in for his team-leading 21st of the year.
The Nailers also scored a goal in the second period, and it came significantly earlier than their first, as they needed just 51 seconds to up their lead to two. Cody Wydo dished a pass into the right side of the slot for Adam Krause, who stepped into a one-timer, driving a shot through his former college teammate Reiter and just in over the goal line. Brace also registered an assist for his third straight multi-point game and 17th overall.
One more goal was tacked on to complete Wheeling's 3-0 triumph in the third. Krause and Brace exchanged passes entering the offensive zone, with Krause finishing off the play with a shot from the right circle. Wydo also assisted on the final goal, as the line of he, Brace, and Krause combined to record seven of the club's eight points on the night.
Franky Palazzese wasn't tested much, but still pitched his fourth shutout of the season for Wheeling, twisting away all 14 shots he faced. Kenny Reiter suffered the loss for Brampton, making 23 saves on 26 shots.
The Nailers will continue their homestand on Friday night, when they host the Toledo Walleye at 7:35. That will be a Flat Screen Friday, presented by The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, in addition to a Frosty Friday. Then, on Saturday, it's Duck Dynasty Night Starring Si Robertson, as Wheeling takes on the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:35. Finally, on Sunday at 4:05, the Norfolk Admirals visit their neighboring state for a Family Funday. McDonald's presents $5 kids tickets, and there will be a post game skate with the team, in addition to Mascot Mania and Pups 'N Pucks, in which fans can bring their dogs to the game.
