Manchester Monarchs News Release

Manchester, N.H. - The Manchester Monarchs surrendered a two-goal lead in the third period, falling in overtime to the Adirondack Thunder, 4-3, Tuesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

The Monarchs (36-16-3-5) lost in overtime, but salvaged a point to remain six points clear of the Thunder (34-18-2-4) for tops in the East Division.

"We play hard and we have lapses. We don't do the little things and when we don't do the little things consistently you can find the puck in the back of your net," Head Coach Rich Seeley said. "We started to turn pucks over. We didn't do the little things like we did in the first period and that's how you let teams back into the game."

The Monarchs struck the Thunder early in the first period with Derek Arnold's 15th goal of the season, on the power-play, at 5:19 of the opening frame. Matt MacKenzie sent a wrist shot from the blue-line toward Thunder goalie Drew Fielding. The Adirondack goaltender made the initial save but scrambled to recover, allowing Gasper Kopitar to tuck the puck in behind Fielding, where Arnold finished off the easy tap in, taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Manchester doubled their lead with Tyler Gjurich netting his first professional goal, at 6:27 of the second period. Mark Anthoine started a two-on-one breakout and despite being taken down from behind, managed to send a wrist shot from his knees toward Fielding's glove hand. The shot rang the post and trickled to Gjurich, who buried the loose puck past Fielding, making it 2-0 after two periods.

Adirondack responded with Ryan Lomberg's 11th goal of the season at 4:39 of the third period. Lomberg corralled the puck along the left wing wall after a battle along the boards with multiple players. Lomberg skated in along the goal line and beat Monarchs goaltender Michael Houser over his shoulder for the short side, backhand goal, cutting into the Monarchs lead, 2-1.

The Thunder stormed back with the equalizer just 2:10 after scoring their first goal when Adirondack's Michael Kirkpatrick struck at 6:49 of the third period. After a turnover in the defensive zone, Kirkpatrick skated in at the top of the left circle and fired a shot past Houser's stick side to tie the game, 2-2.

Manchester would respond with Zac Larraza's 15th goal, on the power-play, at 10:41 of the third period. Michael Boivin sent a wrist shot from the blue-line that was re-directed from the slot by Larraza, beating Fielding to give Manchester the lead at 3-2.

The Thunder would not go quietly, as Greg Wolfe scored his 10th goal of the season with the goalie pulled at 19:04 of the third period. Defensemen Mathieu Brodeur sent a shot that bounced off the end board and right to Wolfe for the game-tying-goal, sending it to overtime.

Adirondack carried the momentum into overtime and scored 17 seconds in on Lomberg's 12th of the season, and 2nd of the game. Lomberg skated through the neutral zone and down the high slot, before beating Houser to secure the win and the two points.

The Monarchs return to action for another divisional match-up against the Reading Royals on Friday, March 11 (7 p.m.) at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
