Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce that Cody Wydo has been selected as the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for the week of February 29-March 6.
Wydo, 24, got off to a bit of a slow start in his first full season of professional hockey, but has put his foot firmly onto the gas pedal and driven forward with an outstanding second half of the campaign. Last week, the Nailers took the ice for two pivotal games in Reading, and thanks to Cody's efforts, were able to earn all four possible points, taking down the Royals, 7-4 and 4-3. On Friday night, Wheeling fell behind 3-2 at the start of the third period, but the Southgate, Michigan native rose to the occasion, scoring his first career hat trick as part of a five-goal third period for the visitors. The second of those turned out to be the game winner - his fourth of the year. Then, on Saturday, Wydo dished out a pair of assists on Clark Seymour's opening goal, and Mathew Maione's tiebreaking tally in the second period. Cody finished the week with three goals, two assists, and five points, in addition to a +7 rating.
The first year forward out of Robert Morris University has collected 33 points over the course of his last 35 games, and currently ranks fourth on the Nailers in scoring. Since the start of January, he has found the scoresheet at least once in 20 of his last 26 contests.
This is the first time that Cody has captured this award in his career, and he becomes the second Nailer to earn ECHL Player of the Week honors this season, joining Derek Army, who received the award at the end of October. Prior to Wydo, Army was the last Wheeling rookie to take home the honors, when he did so last April.
On behalf of Wydo, a case of pucks will be donated to the Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 31,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
