Wheeling Nailers News Release
CINCINNATI, OH ¬" Joey Haddad scored twice to help lead the Wheeling Nailers to a 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones at US Bank Arena Friday night. The win extends the Nailers lead in the North Division to five points over Cincinnati, heading into tomorrow night's matchup at WesBanco Arena between the two clubs.
The Nailers raced out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period. Nick Petersen fielded the puck from behind the net, and stuffed it on the shortside post to score the wrap-around goal. The Nailers scored their second goal on a gritty effort in front of the net, as Joey Haddad found the puck in a scramble in the crease and batted it past Cyclones Marc Chevrie. Wheeling extended the lead to 3-0, when Ben Street picked up a rebound in front of the net, and buried it pas Chevrie top shelf. The Nailers chased Chevrie from the game, as Chet Pickard came in relief for the Cyclones. Cincy got on the board at 18:33 of the first on Brady Calla's first goal the season.
Wheeling grabbed the first goal of the second, on the power play. Joey Haddad scored his second of the game after re-directing a Kyle Bushee shot from the point, to give the Nailers a 4-1 lead. The Cyclones responded on a power play goal of their own nearly three minutes, as Mathieu Aubin broke into the zone and fired a shot under the cross bar past Killeen to pull his team within two. However, Wheeling took their third three goal lead of the game, when Nick Petersen centered a pass to Trevor Hunt in the circle, and Hunt ripped the puck past Pickard to make the score 5-2. The goal was Hunt's first of his professional career. Cincinnati refused to go away, receiving another goal from Brady Calla at 16:04, pulling the Cyclones with in two, 5-3 at the end of two.
The Cyclones came out flying in the third, generating several scoring opportunities, but Patrick Killeen made the big saves down the stretch making 25 saves in the contest. Desipte an ugly and physical end to the game, the Nailers added an empty net goal from Casey Pierro-Zabotel to secure the victory by a 6-3 score.
