Trenton Devils News Release

Trenton, NJ - With two late third period goals, the Elmira Jackals defeated the Trenton Devils, 4-3, in the eighth matchup of the season between the two Atlantic Divison rivals. Corey Cowick and Andrew Sweetland scored 2:04 apart with under five minutes left in the third period as the Jackals improved their road record to 9-4-2 and the Devils lost their fifth straight.

The opening period provided plenty of action by both teams as each goaltender was forced to make a few remarkable saves to keep the score tied, 1-1. Jeff Prough opened the scoring with his 13th goal of the season on a power wraparound while falling to the ice. Dave Leaderer and Ryan Ginand picked up helpers on Prough's goal. The Devils' lead did not last long as Elmira's A.J. Perry knotted the score four minutes later with a nifty forehand-to-backhand deke, finishing off a crisp pass from Brock McBride after Yannick Tifu stole the puck on a failed Devils' breakout.

Both teams started the second period in similar fashion to the first, playing back and forth but without any scoring. However, midway through the period Elmira's R.J. Anderson gave the Jackals their first lead of the night. With Devils forward Jeremy Akeson in the box for a boarding penalty, Anderson blistered a one-timer from the top of the slot past a frozen Connelly, giving the Jackals a 2-1 lead with 9:03 left in the period. Yannick Tifu earned his second assist of the night and Eric Regan picked up his first of two helpers.

Dan Charleston got the Devils even just 1:43 later picking the puck out of a scrum near the attacking blue line and entering the zone on a 2-on-1 with Trevor Kell. Known more for his pinpoint passing ability, Charleston surprised Cousineau and roofed a quick shot up and over the goalie's shoulder to bring the Devils even, 2-2 heading into the second intermission.

After fifteen minutes of scoreless action to begin the third, the Jackals took advantage of a miscue by Shane Connelly behind the net as his stick splintered. Dustin Cameron fed Corey Cowick who beat Connelly, still trying to get pack in position. The Jackals fed off the emotional lift as Devil killer Andrew Sweetland scored his sixteenth goal of the season and ninth vs. Trenton 2:04 after Cowick's goal. Sweetland finished an odd man rush beating Connelly with a quick one-timer underneath the glove to give the Jackals a 4-2 lead with just 2:26 remaining in the game. The insurance goal proved to be the game winning goal as Kory Nagy scored his fifth goal of the year, slamming home a rebound off a Leaderer shot with just over two minutes left. The Jackals and Cousineau held off a flurry of Devils chances in the final seconds to secure their fifth win of the season against Trenton.

The loss drops the Devils to 13-18-0-3 as they look to salvage their three-game homestand Saturday night when they host the Toledo Walleye at 7:00 p.m.
