Loving that Last Minute

Fans at WesBanco Arena are quickly learning that leaving a game early to beat traffic is a terrible idea, when watching the 2013-14 Wheeling Nailers. On Saturday night, the Nailers trailed Evansville 2-1, before Scott Zurevinski knotted the score with nine seconds remaining in regulation, and Mike Ratchuk netted the overtime winner with 43 ticks left on the clock. Zurevinski's tally marked the second time in eight days, and fourth time this season, that Wheeling has scored a tying goal with under a minute to go in the third period. It was also the sixth time that the Nailers have scored with an extra attacker on the ice.

A Heavyweight Takedown

On Thursday night, the Gwinnett Gladiators played host to the South Carolina Stingrays, in a matchup which featured the teams with the highest and lowest point totals in the Eastern Conference. Despite a 25-point differential in the standings, the Gladiators were able to fend off the Stingrays, 3-2, thanks to Antoine Corbin's goal with 7:11 left in the third period. Corbin, who spent the 2012-13 season with Hamilton, netted a pair of goals on Thursday, and has four points in five games, since being acquired from Cincinnati. Former Trenton Titan Brad Phillips made 22 saves, picking up his first win with Gwinnett.

More Shuffling in the Crease

On Friday morning, goaltender Mathieu Corbeil became the latest member of the Nailers to earn a trip to the American Hockey League, as he was recalled by the Utica Comets. Corbeil is the 15th player and third netminder to reach the AHL from the 2013-14 Wheeling squad, joining fellow guardians Mike Condon and Eric Hartzell, after he posted a 2-1-0 record in four games with the team. While Wheeling native John McFarland will remain as the emergency backup goaltender, Alex Westlund has been called into starting duty for Friday. When he takes his position in the crease on Friday night, Westlund will become the second oldest player to appear in a game in team history, at 37 years and 364 days old.

Crazy Eight for a Crazy Position

While Alex Westlund becomes the fourth goaltender to appear in a game for the Nailers, Gwinnett is already playing with its seventh and eighth different backstops of the season. The Gladiators started the campaign with affiliated netminders Louis Domingue and Chris Rawlings, who are currently in Portland and Arizona respectively. That gave Peter Delmas a chance to shoulder the load, as he appeared in ten games, before suffering an injury. Mike Lee, Andrew Loewen, and Matt Cooper each saw a bit of action, leading the Gladiators to their current tandem of Brad Phillips and Paul Karpowich, who have combined to go 1-2-0 in their three starts.

The Compass Points South

For the first time this season, the Nailers will play a road game against a South Division foe, when they battle the Gladiators on Friday night. Thus far this season, Wheeling is 1-0-2 against the South Division, after defeating Greenville and dropping a pair of shootouts to Florida at WesBanco Arena. Last season, the Nailers went 2-4-3 on the road and 5-4-6 overall against the South, including an 0-1-1 mark against Gwinnett. Thanks to those two victories, the Gladiators grabbed a 10-8 lead in the all-time series.
