St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The night started with the Joe Ryan experience and culminated in quite the experience off the bat of Austin Martin. Ryan fanned seven across 4.0 innings in his Major League rehab start and Martin demolished what proved to be the game winning three-run homer in the seventh as the St. Paul Saints took down the Indianapolis Indians 8-5 on Friday night at CHS Field in front of 8,035. The win improves the Saints to 25-18 in the second half.
With the Saints up 5-1 in the seventh, the Indians put up four runs to tie it. With runners at the corners and one out, Mason Martin doubled down the third base line scoring a pair cutting the lead to 5-3. Chris Owings tied the game with a two-run homer to left, his 10th of the season.
In the bottom of the inning the Saints used a long ball of their own to regain the lead for good. Kyle Garlick led off the inning with a hit by pitch. With two outs DaShawn Keirsey Jr. walked. That brought up Martin who drilled a three-run homer to left, his fourth of the season, giving the Saints an 8-5 lead. Martin finished the night 2-3 with a home run, a career-tying high four RBI, and two runs scored.
Early on the story looked like it was going to be Ryan. Over the first 2.0 innings he didn't allow a hit, walked one and all six outs were recorded via strikeouts.
Andrew Stevenson led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer to left, his 15th of the season and third leadoff homer of the season, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.
The Saints added to their lead in the second and it started with a one out walk to Martin. With two outs Stevenson walked putting runners at first and second. Anthony Prato made it 3-0 with a two-run triple to right. Prato finished the night 2-4 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored. That was followed by a Lee RBI single to left scoring Prato increasing the lead to 4-0. Lee finished the night 2-5 with an RBI.
The Indians got one against Ryan in the third when Dom Nuñez hit a one out solo homer to right, his fifth of the season, making it 4-1. Ryan went 4.0 innings allowing one run on one hit while walking two and fanning seven. He threw 71 pitches, 38 for strikes.
In the fifth, the Saints got the run back. With two outs three straight singles scored a run. Jair Camargo, DaShawn Keirsey Jr., and Martin, the latter driving in the run, all collected hits increasing the lead to 5-1.
The same two teams meet in game five of a six-game series on Saturday night at CHS Field at 7:07 p.m. The Saints send RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (4-5, 5.56) to the mound against Indians RHP Beau Sulser (1-1, 9.82). The game can be seen on the CW Network, the Bally Live app (free), and MiLB.TV (subscription), and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
