Muñoz Breaks Sox Organizational Record, Hits Safely in 35th Straight

WORCESTER, M.A. - Yairo Muñoz made Red Sox history on Saturday, extending his hit streak to an organizational record to 35 games with a single in the eighth inning, in a 5-4 Worcester Red Sox (46-41) loss to the Syracuse Mets (33-54).

Muñoz came to the plate in the eighth with two on and one out, still searching for his first knock of the day. And, as usual, Muñoz jumped on the first pitch, lacing a single in to right field to make it a 35-game hit streak. The 26-year-old received a standing ovation from 7,166 at Polar Park as he broke Red Sox legend Dom DiMaggio's previous record of 34 games, a mark set with Boston in 1949.

Eight innings earlier, Syracuse took an early hold on the game, starting the day with three runs in the top of the first inning against WooSox starter Kutter Crawford. Eight of Crawford's first 11 pitches were balls, resulting in a pair of walks to begin his outing, and the Mets took advantage. After a flyout, Patrick Mazeika crushed a three-run home run that just snuck inside the right field foul pole.

The score remained 3-0 until the fourth, when Chance Sisco led off the inning with a double to center for Syracuse. Two batters later, Cheslor Cuthbert singled Sisco home. That was followed with two straight hits, including a Mark Payton RBI double to center that put the road team on top 5-0. Crawford's day ended after Payton's hit, closing his line at 3.2 innings of five-run ball and seven hits.

Mets starter Adam Oller, pitching in his Triple-A debut, was brilliant over 6.2 innings of work. The right-hander did not allow a run, struck out 13 and gave up just two hits in the win.

Behind Crawford, Worcester's middle relief was strong, posting scoreless innings in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Alex Claudio-making his WooSox debut-got the final out of the fourth then added a runless fifth, striking out two in his outing. Matt Andriese entered in the sixth and delivered two innings with zero runs and two strikeouts.

Worcester entered the bottom of the eighth trailing 5-0 and put two on with one out. Muñoz ripped his record-breaking single to load the bases, and after a strikeout, Joey Meneses came to the plate. Meneses saw a ball, then smacked a grand slam over the right centerfield wall to cut the deficit to 5-4, his first home run at Polar Park.

The WooSox conclude the six-game series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. against the Syracuse Mets at Polar Park. Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage starts live at 12:45 p.m. on 100 FM The Pike and the WooSox Radio Network. Worcester's Connor Seabold (0-2, 5.12) faces Jesus Reyes (1-8, 5.81)
