Durham Bulls News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Bulls shortstop Tristan Gray smashed four hits, left fielder Dalton Kelly crushed a home run and drove in two runs and right-hander Chris Mazza opened with four strong innings of work as Durham snapped a four-game skid and halted the Stripers' seven-game win streak in an 8-1 victory over Gwinnett on Saturday evening at Coolray Field.
Lowe got the scoring started by smacking a two-run double to the right-center field gap before coming across on 1B Mike Ford's RBI two-bagger down the right field line to cap a three-run opening frame. Kelly then crushed a solo shot to center, his team-best 18th big fly of the season to extend the margin to four. He would later drive in his second run of the evening as part of a two-run fourth via a sacrifice fly.
After Gray came across on a Gwinnett error in the eighth to make it 7-0, the Stripers ended the Bulls' shutout thoughts in the bottom of the frame with a single score. Gray would help Durham answer back with a run-scoring double to left for his fourth hit of the evening.
Gray (4-5, 2 R, 2 2B, RBI) paced Bulls batters with his fourh knocks, with Kelly (2-3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB) posting a multi-hit effort as well. Durham's triumph ended the team's season-high four-game losing skid while snapping Gwinnett's seven-game win streak.
Though Mazza (4.0 IP, H, 4 K) did not qualify for the win, the right-hander was excellent in his four innings pitched, retiring 12 of 13 batters faced. Relievers Kenny Rosenberg (3.0 IP, 4 H, R, ER, BB, 3 K) and Phoenix Sanders (2.0 IP, 2 H, K) combined for the final five frames, with Rosenberg earning the victory. Gwinnett starter Jasseel De La Cruz (0.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB) suffered the defeat.
The two clubs are scheduled to complete their six-game set on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05pm. RHP Shane Baz (1-0, 1.96) is expected to toe the rubber for the Bulls, while RHP Nolan Kingham (0-4, 9.99) is slated to start for the Stripers.
The Bulls return to Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, August 17 to square off with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in the latest iteration of the Surf & Turf Series. First pitch of the series opener is set for 6:35pm. Tickets for that game, as well as all remaining Bulls home games are available and can be purchased at DurhamBulls.com.
