St. Paul Saints News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The St. Paul Saints had it all set up. A four-run lead and the back end of their bullpen ready to go. Unfortunately, it didn't work out as planned as they gave up seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings in a 7-4 loss to the Indianapolis Indians on Saturday night at Victory Field. The loss snaps the Saints three-game winning streak and drops them to 47-41.

With the Saints up 4-0 in the seventh, Ryan Mason was working his second inning of relief after not giving up a hit in the sixth. Hunter Owen led off the inning with a walk and Eric Gonzalez followed with a single as Owen took third on a fielding error by Gilberto Celestino in right. Christian Bethancourt's triple scored Owen and Gonzalez to make it 4-2. With one out Cole Tucker walked and Kyle Barraclough relieved Mason. He fanned Jared Oliva to increase his streak to 21 consecutive batters retired. That came to an end on the next hitter as Phillip Evans tied the game with a two-run double to left-center.

With the game tied at four in the eighth and Ian Hamilton on the mound, Bligh Madris led off with a walk. With one out Erik Gonzalez hit a grounder to Nick Gordon at third, but his throw to second was low and Drew Maggi couldn't grab it as the error on Gordon allowed Madris to reach second. A walk to Christian Bethancourt loaded the bases for Chris Sharpe. He cleared the bases with a double to left that proved to be the game winning runs.

The Saints took the lead in the first when Tomás Telis drilled a solo homer to right, his eighth of the season, making it 1-0. Telis, who homered on Friday night, homered in back-to-back games for the third time in his career and first time since May 6 and 8, 2014.

In the third Damek Tomscha led off with an infield single to second and Keon Broxton followed with a walk. Nick Gordon then turned on a slider and drilled it down the right field line for a three-run homer, his third of the season, putting the Saints up 4-0.

Saints starter Beau Burrows was strong in his 3.0 innings of work. He allowed just a leadoff single in the second and walked a pair while striking out five in 3.0 scoreless innings.

Jovani Moran took over in the fourth and gave up a single to Michael Chavis and then walked Madris to start the inning. He settled down and fanned Owen before getting Gonzalez to ground into a double play. Moran worked a perfect fifth going 2.0 shutout innings allowing one hit while walking one and striking out three.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the six-game series on Sunday afternoon at 12:35 p.m. central. The Saints send LHP Andrew Albers (5-4, 4.23) to the mound against Indians RHO Max Kranick (1-2, 5.74). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
