Mudbugs Fall Short Against Brahmas
February 26, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Playing in front of 5,739 fans - their largest home crowd since 2008 - the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs could not deliver a victory for the home fans, falling 5-3 to the Texas Brahmas in the conclusion of "Pink in the Rink" weekend Saturday night at the CenturyTel Center. The Mudbugs now stand four points behind Texas for second place in the Berry Conference after dropping to 28-22-3 for the year.
Shawn Limpright and Jeff Kyrzakos each contributed a goal and an assist for the âBugs, who played from behind most of the night after a scoring flurry late in the first period. David Rutherford scored the other Mudbugs tally in his return from a four-game absence and Texas goaltender Wayne Savage made a number of key saves to earn the game's first star.
The first frame stayed scoreless for over 17 minutes before Jason Deitsch opened the scoring, stickhandling through the Mudbug defense before beating John DeCaro for the game's first goal. The âBugs countered less than 90 seconds later when Dave Pszenyczny fed a puck into the Texas zone and allowed Jeff Kyrzakos to feed Shawn Limpright, who beat Savage top shelf to tie the game.
Only 21 seconds after that however, Sean Hurley's shot from the left boards changed direction in front and snuck inside the post to give Texas the 2-1 edge after 20 minutes. Mick Lawrence extended the lead midway through the second with a powerplay goal to put the Brahmas on top 3-1 heading into the third.
Rutherford made a great play early in the third to cut the lead to 3-2, winning an offensive zone draw and controlling it himself in the low slot before beating Savage for his 31st tally of the season at 3:44. Texas took the two-goal edge back when Alex Curran stuffed home a rebound with just under six minutes left, but Kyrzakos buried Limpright's pass after a Travis Clayton faceoff win to draw the âBugs back within a goal. Then just as DeCaro reached the bench for an extra attacker with a minute to go, Greg Hogeboom grabbed the rebound of a Mudbugs shot and sent it into the empty net to complete the scoring.
John DeCaro (16-11-1) stopped 18 shots in the loss as the Mudbugs outshot Texas 32-23. Wayne Savage (18-9-3) made 29 saves in total in the victory. Bossier-Shreveport went 0 for 3 on the powerplay, while Texas finished 1 for 3.
Next up for the Mudbugs is a trip to Allen, Texas for a road matchup with the Americans on Wednesday. Following that game the âBugs return home to start a six-game homestand with contests set for next Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the CenturyTel Center.
