Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (22-27-6) captured the first-ever Cricket Mayor's Cup with their 3-2 victory over the Laredo Bucks (18-28-7) on Saturday night. The Laredo Bucks scored the first goal of the game just a 1:10 in but the Bees would rally scoring three first period goals for the victory.
The Bees will receive a $5,000 donation to a charity of their choice furnished by Cricket Wireless in recognition of winning the season series against the Laredo Bucks. The Bees improve to 9-5-2 this season against their South Texas rivals.
The first period was action packed with the teams combining for five goals, three of which came in the first five minutes of the game. The goals would stand as the only of the game.
Laredo scored first at the 1:10 mark as Keegan Dansereau scored in his first game as a Laredo Buck after Neil Trimm gave him a cross-ice feed to beat Pagliero.
Just 1:14 later the Bees tied the game up at one goal apiece as Tyler Lehrke scored his second goal in as many games after ripping a Nick Sucharski pass past Pier Pelletier. Brett Clouthier picked up an assist for the Bees.
Laredo took the lead right back at 4:42 of the first frame as Brian Matte scored a power-play goal from just inside the face-off circle after a handful of D-to-D passes. Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel and Ryan Lehr picked up the assists.
The Bees would score the next two goals of the first period as Aaron Lee registered a shorthanded goal at 11:48 of the period after a drop pass from Tyler Lehrke. Lee ripped the shop top corner on the blocker side of Pelletier.
The Bees took their first lead of the game at 18:44 of the first period as Aaron Lewicki scored a power-play goal from just across the goal line. Darcy Campbell sent the puck behind the back of the net that was picked up by Lewicki who drove in front and ripped a shot the snuck between the post and the glove of Pelletier.
The second period calmed considerable with the teams combining for only 12 shots on net, all of which were turned away by the two netminders.
The third period would be another back and forth affair but Juliano Pagliero played brick wall keeping the Laredo Bucks off the board. The Killer Bees defense would help to limit the shots on net for the Laredo Bucks allowing only seven Laredo shots.
The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees will get the week off as they travel to Colorado to face the Eagles on Friday and Saturday night. Both games can be heard on Real Country 102.1-FM KBUC and watched online via CHL-TV. The puck will drop at 8:05 p.m. Central time.
