LOVELAND, CO- The Wichita Thunder lost 5-4 in overtime to the Colorado Eagles at the Budweiser Events Center on Saturday night.
Adam Chorneyko scored on a one-on-one rush at 1:34 in overtime, shooting through the five-hole of Marc-Antoine Gelinas.
The back-and-forth game saw the lead change a total of four times. Down 3-2 entering the third, Colorado went in front 4-3 on goals from Aaron Schneekloth at 4:53 and Steve Haddon at 8:47. Schneekloth wrapped a loose puck around the left post while Haddon scored on a slapshot from the top of the left circle. Andrew Martens tied the game for the Thunder at 11:39, shooting from the point on a Thunder power play.
Colorado struck just 29 seconds into the game when Dan Sullivan tipped a centering feed through the five-hole of Gelinas. Wichita rallied for three straight goals to run out the period, beginning with Matt Robinson at 5:20. Robinson took Chris Greene's pass from the left half-wall and ripped it past the right of Eagles' goaltender Kyle Jones. At 11:04, Jesse Bennefield's pass from the left corner deflected off of Jones' pad and into the net to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead. Robin Richards scored Wichita's third goal of the period at 16:44. While on a breakaway, Richards dragged the puck across the crease from right to left before backhanding it behind Jones.
Colorado trimmed the lead to 3-2 early in the second when Riley Nelson connected on the power play 15 seconds into the frame.
Gelinas was 33 of 38 in the loss. Jones earned the win, saving 33 of 37. Wichita went 1 for 9 on the power play. Colorado was 2 for 6.
