MWL1 Bowling Green Hot Rods

Morrison Goes 50/50 On Saturday Night

August 29, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - On What Could've Been Night as the Hot Rods swapped their identity for the Bowling Green Cave Shrimp, Ty Morrison became the first Midwest League player since 2007 to record 50 steals and 50 RBI in a single season. The historic moment was ignored, however, as the Fort Wayne TinCaps grabbed a 3-2 series-opening win at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Morrison entered the game with 54 RBI and 49 steals after a pair of swipes on Friday night against Lake County. He accomplished the rare feat in a key situation in the bottom of the ninth inning. Trailing 3-2, Morrison smacked a two-out single into right field to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in Brett Nommensen. Morrison wasted little time taking second base, stealing the bag almost immediately during Nommensen's at-bat. Morrison wound up stranded at second as the Nommensen was retired to end the game.

Morrison is the first MWL player to go 50/50 since Gorkys Hernandez swiped 54 bases and drove in 50 runs for the West Michigan Whitecaps in 2007. Morrison continues to lead the Hot Rods with 50 steals and trails only Lake County's Delvi Cid for the Midwest League lead.

Fort Wayne took an early lead against Cave Shrimp starter Kyle Lobstein, plating a pair of runs in the first before tagging on another in the fourth. Lobstein would leave after recording the final out in the fourth inning, allowing three runs on five hits, five walks, and five strikeouts.

He turned it over to the bullpen, which dominated Fort Wayne hitters. Matt Stabelfeld threw three scoreless frames before giving way to Jake Sullivan, who retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings.

The solid relief work gave the Cave Shrimp offense time to rally, which they nearly did in the seventh inning. Still trailing 3-0, Dustin Biell singled before Tomas Francisco extended his hitting streak to nine games with a double to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Dave Wendt followed with a single to right to plate one run and cut the deficit to 3-1. After a pop-out, a walk, and a strikeout loaded the bases, Francisco scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball to make it a 3-2 game. That rally, like Morrison's in the ninth, ultimately came up short when Julio Cedeno bounced out to third base with the bases loaded to end the frame.

The series continues on Sunday afternoon with Fan Appreciation Day. An assortment of prizes will be handed out to fans during the game. Gates open at 12:30 PM for Season Ticket holders, 1 PM for the general public. First pitch is at 2:05 PM.

RHP Albert Suarez (0-5, 4.83) gets the start for the Hot Rods against Fort Wayne LHP Mike Watt (5-5, 3.58). You can listen to the game on the radio with Tom Gauthier and Hank Fuerst beginning at 1:50 PM on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
