Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - The River Bandits couldn't get the offense cranked up against Kernels starter Stephen Locke as Cedar Rapids took advantage of the Bandit bullpen to take the second game of the four-game set 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.
The game was scoreless until the Kernels broke through against River Bandit starter Michael Blazek (7-4) with an unearned run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Terrell Alliman hit a ground ball to third that was mishandled by Colin Walsh to score Randal Grichuk from third.
That was the only blemish on the day for Blazek who allowed just four hits and walked only one over his five innings. Despite allowing just the one unearned run, he was still saddled with the loss. The final four runs the Kernels scored were all against Bandit relievers.
The River Bandits waited until the seventh to get the bats going against Kernels starter Stephen Locke (8-7). Down 3-0 after six, Quad Cities rallied for a pair of runs to pull within one in the seventh. The inning started with a leadoff home run by Edgar Lara. Robert Stock added an RBI double to plate Freddy Parejo from first but that was all the Bandits would get on the afternoon.
Immediately following the comeback attempt by the Bandits, Cedar Rapids got a two-run homer from Grichuk which put the game away at 5-2.
Locke worked seven innings and allowed just two runs on six hits to earn the win. He walked one and struck out seven. David Carpenter (6) got the last four outs for the Kernels to record the save.
The series continues Monday night when the River Bandits send right-hander Eric Fornataro to the mound against Cedar Rapids lefty Buddy Boshers. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park.
