
Chiefs Split Sunday Doubleheader

Peoria, IL -The Peoria Chiefs lost game one of a doubleheader with the Clinton LumberKings 6-2 and were on their way to a loss in game two before Anthony Giansanti hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh for a 2-1 victory. The split gives the Chiefs a 30-30 record on the second half of the season and allowed them to pick up a half game on the Kane County Cougars in the wild card race. With eight games to go the Chiefs trail Clinton by four games and Kane County by two an a half as they make a final playoff push.
The LumberKings got on the board in the first off starter Brett Wallach. Nick Franklin walked and advanced to third on a Mickey Wiswall single. Vince Catricala hit a sacrifice fly to center with Franklin just beating the throw at the plate for a 1-0 Clinton lead.
The LumberKings added to their lead in the second inning. Matt Cerione doubled before Ryan Royster drew a walk. James Jones singled to score Cerione and Franklin walked to load the bases. Wiswall was hit by a pitch to score Royster and Catricala walked to score Jones, making it 3-0.
Clinton continued scoring in the third off reliever Yohan Gonzalez. Henry Contreras doubled and advanced to third on a Cerione groundout to first. Royster singled to score Contreras and advanced to second on a Gabriel Noriega groundout to third. Jones doubled off the wall in right field to bring in Royster and push the lead to 6-0.
The Chiefs finally got on the board in the third off starter Tom Wilhelmsen. Hak-Ju Lee singled and advanced to third on a Logan Watkins double off the base of the wall in right. Matt Cerda hit a sacrifice fly to center to get the first run of the game across for the Chiefs and cut the LumberKings lead to 6-1.
The Chiefs cut into the Clinton lead one more time in the fourth. Jae-Hoon Ha singled and advanced to third on a Nelson Perez single. Luis Flores hit a ground ball to third that was misplayed for an error, allowing Ha to score and making it 6-2.
Wallach (6-3) pitched two innings and gave up four runs on four hits while walking four and striking out three. Gonzalez went three innings and gave up two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one. Ronny Morla pitched the final two innings and did not surrender a run on one hit and one strikeout.
The LumberKings scored first again in game two, getting a run across in the fifth off reliever Daniel Keefe. Cerione doubled and stole third base. Gabriel Noriega singled off Keefe's leg and into center field to score Cerione and give Clinton a 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs came back in the seventh to win off reliever Stephen Pryor. Justin Bour singled and advanced to second on a DJ Fitzgerald single. Ha singled to score Bour and tie the game and move Fitzgerald to third. With the infield in, Giansanti hit a high bouncer over third base to score Fitzgerald for a walk-off 2-1 Chiefs win.
Jeff Lorick went three and 2/3 innings and did not allow a run to score on four hits and four strikeouts. Keefe went two and 1/3 innings and gave up one run on two hits and three strikeouts. Corey Martin (3-2) pitched the final inning and did not allow a runner to reach base for the win.
Casey's General Store Player of the Day: - Anthony Giansanti (CF)- Giansanti went 2-for-6 with the game winning RBI in game two.
