Clinton LumberKings News Release

Peoria, IL - The Clinton LumberKings took game one of a twinbill against the Peoria Chiefs with a 6-2 win behind a seven-inning complete-game effort from Tom Wilhelmsen before bowing on a walk-off single by Anthony Giansanti in a 2-1 game-two loss.

Game one saw Wilhelmsen go the distance despite plenty of Peoria baserunners. The 26-year-old right-hander yielded two runs on nine hits and a season-high four walks, yet also struck out five and stranded a total of 11 runners including bases-loaded situations in the second and fourth innings. Wilhelmsen (W, 5-1) is just the second Clinton pitcher to work a complete game this season.

The LumberKings built a 6-0 lead over the first three innings and held on the rest of the way. Vinnie Catricala lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Nick Franklin in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. James Jones lined an RBI single to center to score Matt Cerione in the second, and Peoria starter Brett Wallach had the wheels come off as he forced in runs on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch of Mickey Wiswall and bases-loaded walk to Catricala.

Wallach (L, 6-3) allowed four runs on four hits over just 2.0 innings, walking four while striking out three. Right-hander Yohan Gonzalez served up an RBI single to Ryan Royster and an RBI double to Jones, both in the third inning as the Clinton lead grew to 6-0.

Gonzalez settled in for two more scoreless innings before right-hander Ronny Morla took over and pitched two more scoreless frames, but Peoria's offense never found another run against Wilhelmsen. The Chiefs had runners at first and second in the bottom of the seventh, but Wilhelmsen induced Nelson Perez into a game-ending fielder's choice at second.

In game two, right-hander Jonathan Arias tossed 4.0 scoreless innings in the spot-start for Clinton and was supported by a run in the top of the fifth. Cerione lined a one-out double off the wall in right off right-hander Daniel Keefe and then stole third, bringing the Peoria infield in. Noriega lined a single off Keefe's hip, sending Cerione home for a 1-0 advantage.

The game would stay that way after Arias's exit as right-hander Stephen Pryor pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Right-hander Brandon Josselyn came on to try and close the game in the seventh but was greeted immediately by singles from Justin Bour and D.J. Fitzgerald. Jae-Hoon Ha singled down the right-field line to tie the game, and with Clinton's infield drawn in, Giansanti chopped the game-winning single over the head of third-baseman Mario Martinez.

Josselyn (L, 3-5) got the loss as he suffered his sixth blown save. Chiefs' right-hander Corey Martin (W, 3-2) got the win in relief with a scoreless top of the seventh inning after Keefe and left-hander Jeff Lorick combined for a run over the first six innings.

Catricala saw his 17-game hitting streak snapped in an 0-for-3 performance in game one, yet rebounded to go 1-for-3 in the second game. His two-RBI effort in game one extended his team lead to 77 RBI. Jones went 4-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBI in the first game and finished 5-for-8.

The LumberKings (36-27, 72-59) are 1.5 games ahead of Kane County for the West Division's top playoff spot with eight games remaining. The series against Peoria (30-30, 68-61) continues with game four tomorrow night at 6:30 PM. Right-hander Taylor Stanton (11-6, 4.29) will make his team-leading 23rd start.
