Burlington Bees News Release
Beloit, WI (August 28, 2010) - A tightly-played contest was decided in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday night at Pohlman Field when Matt Morizio's throw to first sailed past Fernando Cruz at first toward the Bees bullpen, handing the Beloit Snappers a 5-4 win in the series opener.
Wang Wei Lin's leadoff infield single set the stage for the walk-off win, the Snappers' second in a row over the Bees in Beloit. The next batter, Reggie Williams, pushed a bunt up the third base side in a sacrifice attempt. Third baseman Deivy Batista, in an aggressive attempt to cut down the lead runner, threw wildly to second, allowing both runners to reach safely. One batter later, James Beresford bunted as well, resulting in the errant throw from Morizio that allowed Lin to cross home with the game-winning run.
The loss was especially frustrating for Burlington, considering they led the contest by as many as three at one point. They won the race to the scoreboard in the second on the first of three Hilton Richardson singles, a liner through the left side that brought home Jose Bonilla. They extended the advantage to 3-0 in the top of the third after Alex McClure set the table with a leadoff double. Jake Kuebler brought him home on a sacrifice fly, and Ben Theriot smoked his sixth double in four games and scored on a Bonilla hit.
The Snappers took the lead by plating single runs in the fourth through seventh innings, though. Bees starter Sugar Ray Marimon left after six innings with the contest knotted at three, and Mitch Hodge was charged with the go-ahead run in the seventh. The Bees bounced back to re-tie the game at four in the eighth. Kuebler led off the frame with a double, and pinch runner Gerard Hall crossed the plate on Bonilla's high chopper to the pitcher.
Bonilla and Richardson finished with three hits apiece.
The Bees are back at Pohlman Field for game two of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00. Join Nick Devlin for the Casebine Community Credit Union Pregame Show at 1:40 on GoBees.com and News Radio 1490 KBUR.
