Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - With a playoff berth in their back pocket thanks to a Lansing loss, the TinCaps edged the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 3-2, Saturday at Bowling Green Ballpark. RHP Matt Lollis fired five scoreless innings.
The TinCaps entered the night with a magic number of one; Lansing's 7-6 loss to Dayton earlier in the evening sealed Fort Wayne's playoff spot.
Jedd Gyorko put the TinCaps on the scoreboard with a first-inning RBI fielder's choice, then Daniel Meeley followed with a two-out RBI single.
Fort Wayne squandered opportunities in the early going, stranding ten runners in the first five innings. The TinCaps scored in the fourth as Danny Payne led off with a double. The next two batters were retired, but Nate Freiman came up with a two-out RBI double to make it a 3-0 game.
The Hot Rods rallied in the seventh, starting with a bunt single by Dustin Biell. Tomas Francisco doubled into the left-field corner, then Dave Wendt singled home Biell to cut the lead to 3-1. RHP Stiven Osuna entered from the bullpen and induced a popout, but a walk followed by a passed ball chased a run home to make it a 3-2 game. After a strikeout and another walk reloaded the bases, Osuna induced an inning-ending groundout to end the uprising.
Bowling Green put runners on base in the eighth and ninth innings, but could not score. RHP Miles Mikolas froze the last batter of the game with a curveball to finish off the victory.
Lollis (5-1) was the winning pitcher, firing five scoreless innings; he allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three. Bowling Green LHP Kyle Lobstein (8-8) took the loss. Mikolas notched his 12th save.
Fort Wayne upped its record to 38-23 in the half, 74-57 for the season. The Hot Rods fell to 24-37 in the second half, 55-75 for the year.
The TinCaps continue the four-game road series against the Hot Rods (Class-A Tampa Bay Rays) Sunday at 3:05 p.m. ET. Fort Wayne LHP Mike Watt (5-5) is expected to start against Hot Rods RHP Albert Suarez (0-5).
