Cleveland Monsters News Release

Brett Clark's goal with just over four minutes remaining proved to be the game-winner, as the Lake Erie Monsters (26-28-0-6) topped the Charlotte Checkers (31-28-0-2) 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina. Trent Daavettila and Karl Stollery had a goal and an assist each, while David van der Gulik added a pair of assists for the Monsters. Kent Patterson had 21 saves in net for the Monsters. The Monsters host Toronto Wednesday at 7:00 PM.

Trent Daavettila opened the scoring when he swatted home the rebound from a Karl Stollery shot at 7:45 of the first period. The goal was Daavettila's first of the season and first as a Monster, and was assisted by Karl Stollery and David van der Gulik.

Chris Terry scored a shorthanded goal for Charlotte to tie the game 1-1 at 2:16 of the second period, but the Monsters regained the one-goal lead before the period ended. Karl Stollery put a puck toward the front of the net at 8:20 of the second period, and the puck bounced over the goal line for Stollery's sixth goal of the season. Mark Olver and Trevor Cheek assisted on the second Monsters goal of the game.

The two teams battled in a 2-1 game for a majority of the third period, before Rasmus Rissanen tied the game at 2-2 for the Checkers on a low shot from the high slot at 14:39 of the third period. The Monsters were quick to answer, as David van der Gulik spotted Brett Clark alone at the inside edge of the right faceoff circle, and from the blue line van der Gulik connected on a pass to Clark, who sent a puck top-shelf for his fourth goal of the season and the eventual game-winning goal. Daavettila also assisted on the goal. Clark's goal game with 4:08 left in the game.

Kent Pattterson stopped 21 of 23 shots for the Monsters to improve to 1-1-0 this season. Mike Murphy stopped 40 of 43 Monsters shots in net for the Checkers; he is 4-10-0 after the loss.

The Monsters are back in action Wednesday when they host the Toronto Marlies at 7:00 PM.
