Etem's Two Goals Pace Admirals

March 16, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release

HERSHEY, PA. - Emerson Etem scored twice and Andre Petersson recorded his third goal as an Admiral to lead Norfolk (33-21-1-7) over the Hershey Bears (31-23-4-4), 3-2, at Giant Center Sunday afternoon.

Norfolk's John Gibson (19-14-4) saved a heaping 35 of 37 shots Sunday afternoon while the Bears' Philipp Grubauer (11-10-1) held 33 shots out 36 he faced.

In the first, two quick Hershey penalties put the Admirals on a five-on-three man advantage. Norfolk was 0-for-11 this weekend on the power play entering the five-on-three and finally capitalized when Andre Petersson whiffed on a shot that went right to Devante Smith-Pelly standing under the left ring.

Smith-Pelly one-timed the inadvertent Petersson pass to Etem standing in the middle slot. Etem wasted no time and slapped a shot that beat Grubauer high to the left side at 17:22 of the first period. Norfolk took the 1-0 lead into the second period.

The Norfolk lead grew 50 seconds into the period when Etem raced into Bears' territory and put a cross-ice pass on the stick of Andre Petersson playing in his fifth contest as an Admiral. Petersson roped a one-timer around Grubauer's glove to the same spot Etem scored and it was 2-0 Norfolk early in the second.

Hershey didn't go away and responded when Michael Latta beat Gibson on the third effort after the Norfolk netminder denied the first two attempts on net. Latta's eleventh of the season and third against the Admirals cut the lead in half at 9:41 of the middle frame.

Norfolk held fast and came back with another score off the stick of Etem, his second of the game. Admirals' captain Garnet Exelby drove a shot pass towards the short-side post where Etem held out his stick to redirect the puck off the post and in to extend the lead back to two at 13:26 of the second.

A bizarre shorthanded goal for the Bears reached the back of the net on a Tyson Strachan clearing attempt during another Admirals' power play. Strachan shoved a loose puck out of his zone that skipped all the way down the ice and fluttered through the defense of Gibson, pulling Hershey back within one 16:25 into the second period.

The Admirals hung on to the one-goal lead throughout the third and withstood several late charges by the Bears to grab the 3-2 victory to cap off their three-game divisional road trip in which they went 1-2.

Norfolk was 1-for-5 on the power play while the Bears went a stale 0-for-7.

The Admirals improve to 33-21-1-7 but stay in eighth in the Eastern Conference. Hershey is now 31-23-4-4 and remains outside of playoff contention in ninth in the conference.
