Amerks Close out Weekend with 7-3 Loss to B-Sens

March 16, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans and Binghamton Senators met for the second time in two nights Sunday in Rochester, where the visitors used a five-goal third period en route to a 7-3 win over the Amerks in the back-end of a home-and-home series at The Blue Cross Arena. With the loss, the Amerks fall to 30-22-6-4 on the season.

Despite taking a 2-1 lead to the locker room after the first period, the Amerks allowed the tying goal in the final minute of the second period before the Senators took control during the third, scoring five goals in the final 20 minutes.

Kevin Porter finished with a goal and two assists for Rochester with Mike Zigomanis and Luke Adam adding goals to round out the scoring for the home team. Matt Hackett received his first start since last weekend and made 24 saves in the losing effort.

Cole Schneider, Buddy Robinson and Matt Puempel each tallied a goal and an assist for the visiting Senators, and Matt Stone added two third period goals. Andrew Hammond started in net for Binghamton and stopped 22 shots to earn his third straight win between the pipes for the Sens.

The Amerks jumped ahead 1-0 on Zigomanis' 12th goal of the season, when the veteran forward was in the right place at the right time for a rebound off Johan Larsson's shot and managed to bang the puck home.

Both teams fell into penalty trouble in the latter half of the first period, and each team potted goals with the man-advantage. With the B-Sens on a 5-on-3 following penalties to Luka Vidmar and Brayden Irwin, Puempel ripped a one-timer from the high circle to tie the score 1-1.

Binghamton responded with three consecutive penalties just 49 seconds apart, and the Amerks power-play soon took advantage. Porter, who was playing up top with the puck, fired a high shot on net that hit a Binghamton defenseman and fell flat for Adam, who buried his 27th goal of the season.

While the Amerks played a stingy defensive second period and kept the B-Sens from capitalizing on any quality scoring chances, Schneider received a pass from Robinson beside the net and chipped the puck past Hackett to draw even at 2-2.

The combination of Schneider and Robinson would strike once again 4:48 into the third period when the duo converted on a 2-on-1 play, this time with Robinson as the finisher, to take a 3-2 lead and jumpstart a five-goal run for Binghamton. David Dziurzynski would add a goal of his own after collecting his own rebound and poking the puck past Hackett with 9:30 left in regulation.

The B-Sens put the game out of reach at 5-2 on a back-door play with Stone being the beneficiary with 5:21 left in the game. Porter would add his 14th goal of the season on the power-play before Fredrik Claesson and Stone scored goals to put Binghamton up by four in the final couple minutes.

The Amerks set off on a three-game road swing on Friday, March 21 when they travel to Cleveland for the first of back-to-back tilts with the North Division rival Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will be the eighth of 10 scheduled meetings between the two teams this season and will be broadcast live on Sports 1280 WHTK.
