Houston scored 47 seconds into the game and then never trailed as the Aeros (7-1-0-3) halted the Lake Erie Monsters (4-8-1-0) streak of back-to-back home wins with a 5-3 score at Quicken Loans Arena. Hugh Jessiman tallied a pair of goals for the Monsters in his first game back from a four-game suspension, and Monsters point leader David van der Gulik registered a goal and an assist in his first game back after missing four contests with the flu.
Jon DiSalvatore gave the Aeros the 1-0 lead just 47 seconds into the game as he beat Monsters goalie Trevor Cann with a shot along the ice from in close, and Jed Ortmeyer extended Houston's lead at 10:45 of the opening frame when he batted in a Warren Peters rebound.
After trailing 2-0 after the first period, the Monsters cut the Houston lead in half when Jessiman tipped a Stefan Elliott point shot by Aeros goalie Matt Hackett for his first goal of the game and second of the season. Cameron Gaunce also assisted.
Houston answered with 1:25 remaining in the second period to regain a two-goal lead, increasing their advantage to 3-1 when Peters tipped a Tyler Cuma point shot into the Monsters goal.
Early in the third period, the Aeros took a three-goal lead when David McIntyre scored on a second effort following an attempt to stuff the puck between Cann's left pad and the goal post; McIntyre's sixth goal made it 4-1.
Jessiman scored his second of the game on a wrist shot from the high slot at 6:11 of the third period. Jessiman received a pass from van der Gulik and fired it into the net to pull the Monsters to within two goals. Gaunce recorded his second helper of the night on the goal.
With Houston up 4-2, Jeff Taffe carried the puck up the right wing, unobstructed, and slipped a wrist shot past Cann from the right circle at 12:21 to put the Aeros back up by three goals.
van der Gulik scored on a one-timer at 16:11 to cut the Aeros lead to 5-3, which is how the game would end. Tyson Barrie found van der Gulik open in the slot, and his one-timer deceived Hackett for the power play tally, the third goal of the season for van der Gulik. Ryan Stoa was also credited with an assist on the play.
Cann's record falls to 3-7-0-0 for the Monsters; he turned away 18 of 23 shots. Hackett is 5-0-0-2 for Houston; he stopped 25 of 28 shots.
The Monsters are back in action Saturday night in Hamilton at 7:00 p.m. Following Saturday's road game, the Monsters will play five consecutive games at home.
