GREENVILLE, SC - The Manchester Monarchs received five points from Joel Lowry and Matt Leitner, and drubbed the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, 8-4, Friday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Center.
The Monarchs (16-9-1-1) evened their season series with the Swamp Rabbits (14-10-2-0), 2-2.
The Monarchs opened the scoring when Spencer Watson netted his 1st professional goal at 10:40 of the opening period. While on the power play, Joel Lowry drifted behind the Greenville cage and sent a backhanded pass against the grain to a wide-open Watson to the left of the net, who made no mistake and beat Greenville goaltender, Brandon Halverson, to put the Monarchs up, 1-0.
Greenville tied the game at 12:02 of the first period when Caleb Herbert scored his 16th goal of the season. While Greenville was on the power play, Herbert made his way to the top of the right circle and sent a wrister through traffic and past the blocker of Monarchs goaltender, Brendan Komm, to even the score, 1-1.
The Swamp Rabbits took their first lead of the game when Allan McPherson scored his 12th goal of the season at 13:40 of the first period. McPherson took a stretch pass from Matt Prapavessis and went in on a clean breakaway. McPherson unloaded a shot from the slot that Komm saved, but the rebound fell directly to McPherson who kicked the puck to his forehand and slid the puck past the sprawling right arm of Komm, to put the Swamp Rabbits up, 2-1.
Manchester tied the game when Zac Lynch netted his 13th goal of the season at 5:44 of the second period. Sam Kurker possessed the puck in the offensive zone and finally took a shot from just inside the right point. Lynch, who was standing in the right face-off circle, tipped the Kurker drive and beat Halverson to tie the game, 2-2.
The Monarchs took the lead at 12:30 of the middle frame when Lowry notched his 12th goal of the season. Leitner dragged the puck into the Greenville zone on a 2-on-1 and sent a cross-ice pass to Lowry in the left circle, where Lowry sent a snap shot off the glove of Halverson to give the Monarchs the 3-2 lead.
Greenville tied the game, 3-3, when McPherson scored his second goal of the night just :30 seconds into the third period. McPherson skated the blue line and sent a wrister on net through traffic and past the blocker of Komm to even the game.
Manchester regained the lead when Mikkel Aagaard scored his 3rd goal of the season at 5:01 of the final frame. Aagaard took a short pass from Watson on the doorstep and slammed the puck home past the right leg of Halverson, to give the Monarchs the 4-3 lead.
The Monarchs made it 5-3 when David Kolomatis scored just :20 seconds after the Aagaard tally. After a clean face-off win by Leitner to Lowry, Kolomatis sent a wrister through traffic and the pads of Halverson for his 2nd goal of the season.
Manchester padded its lead when Watson scored his second goal of the night at 9:32 of the final stanza. Lowry created a turnover in the Greenville zone and the puck found Watson at the left point. Watson skated to the dot where he unloaded a wrister that made its way through the left arm of Halverson, and trickled into the net to give the Monarchs a 6-3 lead.
The Monarchs continued their offensive explosion when Kolomatis scored his second goal of the night at 12:44 of the third period. Five seconds into a power play, Kolomatis sent a slap shot from the middle of the blue line through net-front traffic and past Halverson, to push the Manchester advantage to 7-3.
