Manchester win streak halted at seven games
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Manchester Monarchs scored three goals in the third period, but fell, 6-5, against the Jacksonville Icemen on Wednesday night at the Veterans Memorial Arena, to end their winning streak at seven games.
The Monarchs (15-8-1-1) late comeback was not enough to overpower the Icemen (5-13-2-2) after an offensive explosion of four goals for Jacksonville in the first period.
Manchester started the scoring just :48 seconds into the game on the first goal of the season by Spencer Watson. Zac Lynch passed the puck to Watson in the top of the slot, where Watson skated down past the hashmarks and wristed a shot past the glove of Icemen goaltender, Austin Lotz, to give Manchester the 1-0 lead.
Jacksonville answered at 5:31 of the first period on the 9th goal of the season for Alexandre Goulet. Dajon Mingo skated the puck along the goal line before sending a pass to Scott Savage at the top left point. Savage sent a cross-ice pass to the middle of the right circle where Goulet one-timed a shot past Monarchs goaltender, Charles Williams, to tie the game 1-1.
The Icemen scored :34 seconds later on the 4th goal of the season for Cameron Critchlow at 6:05 of the first period. Christopher Dienes wristed a shot from the blue line into traffic in front of the net, where Critchlow took two quick shots on Williams before sneaking it past his glove, to give Jacksonville a 2-1 lead.
Jacksonville added to their lead at 7:43 of the first period on the 5th goal of the season by Tanner Eberle. Elgin Pearce corralled the puck in the right corner where he pushed the puck into the right circle and onto Eberle's stick. Eberle fired a wrist shot over the glove of Williams to make it a 3-1 Jacksonville lead.
Jacksonville didn't stop there, as they struck again at 10:21 of the first period on the 4th goal of the season for Dienes. Manchester's Justin Agosta cleared the puck up his right-wing wall where Dienes pinched on the blue line and flipped the puck towards Williams that bounced over his pad and into the net, to give Jacksonville a 4-1 lead.
The Icemen started the second period right where they left off at 3:17 of the second when Cristiano DiGiacinto scored his 1st goal of the season. Critchlow dumped the puck in from the red line where it bounced off the glass and out in front of Monarchs new goalie, Branden Komm. DiGiacinto raced to the puck and shot it over a diving Komm to give the Icemen a 5-1 lead.
Manchester got one back on a power-play goal by Matt Leitner, his 5th goal of the season at 6:09 of the second period. Jacksonville's Chase Harrison tried to clear the puck behind his own net where Leitner batted the puck out of the air and in front of the net. Leitner took two quick shots on Lotz, with the second finding its way through the wickets of the Icemen goalie and into the net, to make it, 5-2, Icemen.
Jacksonville extended their lead on the 6th goal of the season by Jimmy Lodge at 1:05 of the third period. Goulet entered the offensive zone along the right wing where he wristed a shot on net that Komm kicked into the slot. Lodge followed up on the rebound and shot it past Komm to give the Icemen a 6-2 lead.
The Monarchs cut the lead in half on a power-play goal by Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman at 2:35 of the third period. Alexx Privitera took a shot from the left point that was tipped in front by Smotherman over the shoulder of Lotz and into the top of the net, to cut the Icemen lead to 6-3.
Manchester scored just over a minute later on the 12th goal of the season by Lynch at 3:56 of the third period. Lynch received a pass in the slot and backhanded a pass to the right circle to Sam Kurker. Lynch drove towards the far-left post and received the pass on the give-and-go from Kurker and he pushed the puck past Lotz, to cut the Jacksonville lead to 6-4.
The Monarchs added one final tally at 4:20 of the third period, when Joel Lowry scored his 11th goal of the season. Leitner sent a pass from the right hashmark across the offensive zone to Lowry at the top of the left circle, where he walked in and sniped a shot between the legs of Lotz, to pull the Monarchs within a goal, 6-5.
The Monarchs travel to Greenville, S.C. to take on the Swamp Rabbits Thursday, December 14th at 7:00 at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
