Loveland, CO - Wichita's comeback bid fell short on Wednesday night, losing 4-3 to Colorado at the Budweiser Events Center. Down three early in the game, Wichita pulled even in the third period. Joey Ratelle scored the game-winner with less than five minutes left to help the Eagles to their 17th win of the season.
Travis Ewanyk had a goal and an assist and Greg Chase potted his seventh of the year in the losing effort.
Colorado got off to a quick start, scoring the first three goals of the night. Matt Garbowsky found the net 1:27 into the first period to make it 1-0. Emil Romig increased the lead to 2-0 at 10:08. Two minutes later, Drayson Bowman scored his seventh of the season to give the home team a 3-0 advantage. Steven Iacobellis cut the lead back to two at 16:44 as he found a rebound to the right of Sam Brittain and scored to make it 3-1.
Chase got the Thunder within one with his seventh goal of the season at 11:16 of the second. He caught a pass from Chad Butcher near the bottom of the right circle and slid it past Brittain to make it 3-2.
Ewanyk tied the game at three just three minutes into the third with a missile from the right circle. Ratelle gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead at 14:14 when he stripped the puck from a Thunder defenseman in the corner, came all the way across the crease and beat Joel Rumpel. Brittain held the fort in the final five minutes for the 4-3 victory.
Ewanyk collected his eighth goal of the year. Iacobellis notched his third goal of his pro career. Rumpel suffered the loss, stopping 25 of 29 shots. Brittain claimed the win, stopping 27 of 30 shots he faced.
Wichita went 0-for-1 on the power play. Colorado was 0-for-2 on the man advantage.
The Thunder closes their five-game road trip with a pair in Boise against the Idaho Steelheads starting Friday at 8:10 p.m. CST.
