LAST WEEK ¬â¢S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Hershey (2/9): Left wing Boyd Kane scored the decisive goal in the shootout as the Manchester Monarchs dropped a 2-1 shootout loss to the Hershey Bears on Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Left wing Bud Holloway scored the lone goal for the Monarchs in regulation and defenseman Patrick McNeill collected the only regulation goal for the Bears. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (12-11-4) drew his fourth shootout loss of the season, stopping 25-of-26 shots on goal in both the regulation and the overtime. Zatkoff only allowed one goal on five opportunities in the shootout. Hershey goaltender Todd Ford (4-0-1) collected his fourth win of the season, his second win against Manchester, halting 28-of-29 shots on goal in regulation and the overtime period and silencing all five Monarchs shooters in the shootout. Manchester was 0-for-4 on the power play. Hershey was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Vs. Portland (2/11): The Manchester Monarchs hold a one point lead in the Atlantic Division as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Portland Pirates on Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Center Jordan Nolan scored the Monarchs lone goal. Defenseman T.J. Brennan, right wing Mark Mancari and center Luke Adam scored for the Pirates. Monarchs netminder Martin Jones (18-6-1) suffered his sixth loss of the season, stopping 20-of-23 shots on goal. Portland goaltender Jhonas Enroth (17-14-1) collected his 17th win of the season, halting 35-of-36 shots on goal. Manchester was 1-for-9 on the power play. Portland was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
Vs. Bridgeport (2/12): The Manchester Monarchs recovered from a two-goal, first period deficit to beat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 6-2 on Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Left wing Dwight King scored two goals for the Monarchs, with center Justin Azevedo, center Corey Elkins, right wing Brandon Kozun and defenseman Colten Teubert adding tallies in the winning effort. Left wingers Justin DiBenedetto and Eric Castonguay scored Bridgeport ¬â¢s two goals. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (13-11-4) collected his 13th win of the season, stopping 26-of-28 shots on goal. Bridgeport netminder Joel Martin (1-6-0) suffered his sixth loss of the season, halting 12-of-16 shots on goal, while goaltender Riley Gill (0-0-0) halted 19-of-21 shots on goal in relief of Martin. Manchester was 1-for-4 on the power play. Bridgeport was 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
Vs. Springfield (2/13): The Manchester Monarchs scored three goals in the third period to top the Springfield Falcons 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Right wing Brandon Kozun potted two third period goals in the win and left wing Dwight King, center Oscar Moller and right wing David Meckler also lit the lamp for Manchester. Right wing Kyle Wilson (two) and center Ben Guite collected goals for Springfield. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (19-6-1) collected his 19th win of the season, stopping 26-of-29 shots on goal. Springfield goaltender David LeNeveu (13-13-2) suffered his 13th loss of the season, halting 28-of-33 shots on goal. Manchester was 2-for-7 on the power play. Springfield was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (33-17-1-5, 72 points) sit in first place in the Atlantic Division with 72 points. The Portland Pirates (32-15-4-1, 69 points) trail the Monarchs by three points, placing second in the division with 69 points. The Connecticut Whale (26-22-2-5, 59 points) trail the Monarchs by 13 points, placing them third in the seven team division with 59 points. The Worcester Sharks (25-18-2-6, 58 points) trail Manchester by 14 points, placing fourth in the division with 58 points. The Springfield Falcons (24-25-1-3, 52 points) sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 52 points. The Providence Bruins (23-27-3-1, 50 points) are sixth in the division with 50 points, while the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (19-28-3-3, 44 points) are in seventh place with 44 points.
Manchester ¬â¢s power play is ranked 10th in the AHL as they have scored 51 goals on 267 opportunities for a 19.1% conversion rate. On the penalty kill, the Monarchs are ranked seventh in the league as they have given up 38 goals when they have been down a man. They have been shorthanded 251 times this season and have an 84.9% penalty kill rating.
Manchester ¬â¢s home power play unit ranks sixth overall out of 30 AHL teams, scoring 34 goals with the man advantage in 151 opportunities for a 22.5% conversion rate.
The Monarchs have earned a point in nine of their last 10 games, posting a record of 6-1-0-3 over that span.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (12-27=39) is tied with left wing Bud Holloway (17-22=39) for first place on the Monarchs with 39 points.
Voynov ¬â¢s 39 points and 12 goals give him the league lead in both categories among AHL defensemen, and his six power play goals place him in a tie for second in the league among blueliners.
Named to his second consecutive AHL All-Star game, Voynov participated in the 2011 Reese ¬â¢s AHL All-Star Skills Competition, claiming victory in the Reebok Fastest Skater event with a time of 14.197 seconds. Voynov also appeared in the AHL All-Star Game at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross last Monday night at Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Voynov assisted on one of the Eastern Conference ¬â¢s goals on their way to the 11-8 victory.
Holloway recorded the lone Monarchs goal during Wednesday ¬â¢s 2-1 shootout loss against the Hershey Bears. He leads the team with 17 tallies this season.
Center Oscar Moller (14-24=38) collected four points in his last two games (1-3=4), giving him 38 points on the season as well as third place on the Monarchs with 38 points.
Overall, Moller has four game-winning goals this season which ties him for 13th place in the AHL.
Left wing Dwight King (17-18=35) collected five points (3-2=5) last week, scoring three goals and adding two assists.
Center Andrei Loktionov (8-23=31), recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on January 20, leads the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-15.
Loktionov has recorded five points (3-2=5) and two penalty minutes in 17 games with the Kings. He tallied the game-winning goal in the Kings 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon.
Loktionov is tied with center Corey Elkins with 31 points (14-17=31) for fifth place on Manchester ¬â¢s roster this season. Elkins has recorded a goal and two assists in his last two games (1-2=3).
Center Marc-Andre Cliche ¬â¢s 30 points (14-16=30) is tied for seventh place on the Monarchs squad with center Justin Azevedo (13-17=30).
Cliche, with 14 goals, has already eclipsed his previous career-highs of 11 goals, set in both the 2007-08 and the 2009-10 Monarchs seasons.
Azevedo is tied with right wing Brandon Kozun (14-13=27) for the Monarchs lead in game-winning goals as they have both collected five this season. Their five game-winning goals are also tied for fourth in the AHL in the same category.
Kozun is third among rookies with five game-winning goals, his most recent coming against the Falcons on Sunday.
Left wing David Meckler (14-11=25) is tied Moller, Elkins, Cliche and Kozun for third place on the Monarchs in goal scoring with 14 tallies.
Defenseman Thomas Hickey (6-15=21) places second overall on the Monarchs with a plus-14 rating.
Left wing Richard Clune ¬â¢s 176 penalty minutes places him fifth overall in the league in the same category.
Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff has a record of 13-11-4 with a 2.96 goals-against-average and a .904 save percentage in 30 games this season.
Zatkoff is undefeated in regulation in his last six starts. He has collected a record of 3-0-0-3 with a 2.08 goals-against-average and a .936 save percentage.
Netminder Martin Jones has played in 29 games with the Monarchs and has collected a record of 19-6-1 with a 2.18 goals-against-average and a .929 save percentage.
Jones has also recorded the fifth-best save percentage this season among the league ¬â¢s goaltenders, posting a 0.929 save percentage in his first AHL season.
Alongside Voynov, Jones was a Monarchs representative at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross. Jones participated in the 2011 Reese ¬â¢s AHL All-Star Skills Competition, helping the Eastern Conference to a 19-7 Skills Competition victory.
Jones held opposing shooters scoreless in the Reese ¬â¢s Pass and Score event, making three saves. Jones only allowed 1-of-6 shooters to score during the Panasonic Breakaway Relay, as Milwaukee left wing Linus Klasen scored on Jones following two spins between the hashmarks.
Jones also played in the first 30-plus minutes of the contest, making 15 saves on 19 shots on goal, combining with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins netminder John Curry to lead the Eastern Conference All-Stars to an 11-8 victory over their counterparts from the Western Conference.
