Shark Snap Shot:

The Sharks chomped two out of a possible two points last week in one game highlighted by a 5-0 victory over the Falcons on Friday in Springfield behind Darren Machesney's Sharks debut in goal. The Sharks player of the week nominee was goaltender Daren Machesney; becoming the first goaltender in Sharks history to post a shutout in his debut (25 saves) along with a #3 star nod in the 5-0 victory in Springfield on Friday. The Sharks enter the week riding a season high five game winning streak and have points in six straight games (5-0-0-1). Worcester is 1-0-0-0 on their season long five game road swing which continues during their first ever trip to Rochester on Wednesday.

The Sharks scored four goals in the second period to chomp their way to their season high fifth straight victory in a 5-0 win over the Falcons on Friday evening at the Mass Mutual Center. It was the first time in Sharks history they had two straight shutout victories. Andrew Desjardins (2-1-3) and Dan DaSilva (1-2-3) each had three points and Daren Machesney made 25 saves in his first start in a Sharks uniform in the shutout decision. Before the game, the Worcester Sharks signed Jonathan Cheechoo to his third PTO this season and defenseman Mike Moore became the 4th player in Sharks history to wear the captain "C" on his jersey. Benn Ferriero and Brandon Mashinter also scores while Sean Sullivan added two assists.

Sharks in the Atlantic: The Sharks are swimming in 4th place with 58 points (25-18-2-6) in the Atlantic Division through 51 games, which is 14 points behind the first place Manchester Monarchs (56gp), 11 points behind the 2nd place Portland Pirates (52gp), and one point behind the 3rd place CT Whale (55gp). The Falcons (52 pts in 53gp) and Bruins (50pts in 54gp) are right in the mix of things followed by the 7th place Sound Tigers with 44 points (53gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

400 WINS + and 1000 + games...

400 WINS!....With the 4-1 victory vs. Springfield on November 1, 2009, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 400 win plateau.

1000 GAMES... With the 3-1 victory at Springfield on January 14, 2011, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 1,000 games plateau.

Worcester Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer, who plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks, is currently the longest-tenured coach (13th season) in the American Hockey League. His current regular season record is now: 467-420 -48 -42-34. (W-L-T-OTL-SOL)

In Coach Sommer's first AHL victory.... The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17th 1998. Coincidentally, Assistant Coach David Cunniff recorded an assist as a member of the River Rats in the hockey game.

Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 313 of the 467 victories (67%)... Coach Cunniff filled in for Roy in a 3-2SOW in Springfield on December 29, 2010 as coach Sommer was in California attending his father's funeral.

Shark Bites:

Gone but not forgotten... Before the Sharks on January 10th, there was a moment of silence for former Sharks and Falcons player Tom Cavanagh who passed away on January 6th in Providence, RI. Tom Cavanagh played for coach Sommer in Cleveland, and then came to Worcester when the franchise relocated for the 2006-07 season. He played for the Sharks through the end of the 2008-09 season and finished his Worcester career with point totals of 46-92-138. He remains the team's all-time leader in points and assists. A graduate of Toll Gate High in Warwick, R.I., and then Harvard University, Cavanagh eventually went on and played for the San Jose Sharks. Our thoughts and prayers to the entire Cavanagh family.

Captains for the 2010-11 season: Jay Leach was the captain before he was traded to New Jersey on Feb 9th and Mike Moore was named the Sharks 4th captain in team history on Feb 11th. Assistant Captains on the road: Jonathan Cheechoo (1st year) and Nick Petrecki (1st year). Assistant Captains at home: Andrew Desjardins (1st year) and Sean Sullivan (1st year)... Dan DaSilva, Cory Quirk, Joe Loprieno, and Frazer McLaren have also worn the assistant captain "A".

From east to west..... The Sharks have had 10 different players (18 call-ups) receive at least one call up this season to San Jose... Currently; Carter Hutton, Logan Couture, Jason Demers, Derek Joslin, Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi, Marc-Edourd Vlasic, and Doug Murray are all former Worcester Sharks that are currently playing with the San Jose Sharks.

New Faces... On Feb 8th, the Sharks sent Jay Leach and Steve Zalewski to the Devils for Patrick Davis and Mike Swift.

- Patrick Davis, a six-foot-two, 195-pound native of Sterling, MI was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the fourth round (99th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He has played in nine career NHL games with the New Jersey Devils over two seasons (2008-2010), posting one goal. This season with the Albany Devils, Davis, 24, posted 13 points (3 goals, 10 assists) and 20 penalty minutes in 40 games. Davis will wear number 15 with Worcester.

- Mike Swift, a five-foot-eight, 175-pound native of Peterborough, Ontario has spent the past three seasons with Lowell/Albany after signing with the Devils organization as a free agent in April 2008. This season, he was second on the Albany team in scoring (T-first in goals) with 28 points (16 goals, 12 assists) and 48 penalty minutes in 48 games. Mike led the Lowell Devils in goals last season and will wear number 16 with Worcester. He made his Sharks debut in the 5-0 win at Springfield on Feb 11.

Home openers... the Sharks are 2-1-1-1 in five home openers at the DCU Center, including a 4-3 overtime loss to the Bruins on Saturday. Worcester was the last team in the AHL to host their home opener, and October 23rd was the Sharks latest home opener on record. The Sharks lost in a shootout 5-4 to Portland in 2006, defeated Portland 3-2 in 2007, defeated the Bruins in overtime 3-2 in 2008, and lost to Lowell 7-5 in 2009.

Score first... the Sharks have scored FIRST 24 times in 51 games this season (20-3-0-1) after scoring first in 42-of-80 games last season (34-6-0-2).... Benn Ferriero (4) Jonathan Cheechoo (2), Kevin Henderson (2), T.J. Trevelyan (3), Sean Sullivan (2), Dan DaSilva (2), Andrew Desjardins (2), Matt Irwin (1), Steve Zalewski (1), Chris Lawrence (1), Brandon Mashinter (1), Just Braun (1), Jamie McGinn (1), and Joe Loprieno (1) have the others.

Slim Margins... 26 of the Sharks 51 games have been decided by one goal this season... Worcester is 14-4-2-6 in those 26 games.

Don't allow 4... The Sharks are 24-8-1-3 when they allow three goals or less in a game...BUT... Worcester is 1-10-1-3 when they allow four goals or more.

Can't score 4... The Sharks had been held under four goals in 20 out of 22 games (49GF) from Dec 17th - Feb 6th and had a 9-10-1-2 record during that stretch.

Quarter Mark... the Sharks finished the 1st quarter of the AHL season with a 10-6-1-3 record good for 24 points through 20 games. It was the best first quarter by the Worcester Sharks in five seasons.

through 40 games... the Sharks finished the 1st half of the AHL season with a 19-14-2-5 record good for 45 points through 40 games. It was the 2nd best first half by the Worcester Sharks in five seasons. Worcester was 18-15-1-6 (43pts) in 2006-07, 18-16-3-3 (42pts) in 2007-08, 21-18-0-1 (43pts) in 2008-09, and 24-13-1-2 (51pts) through 40 games last season.

T.J. reaches 100.... Sharks forward T.J. Trevelyan skated in his 100th game for the Sharks on January 10th and scored his 35th goal as a Shark in the 3-2 shootout loss to Springfield.

Z reaches 200 games... Steve Zalewski became just the 5th player in Sharks history to hit the 200gp plateau in the Sharks 3-1 win in Springfield on Friday, January 14, 2011. "Z" had skated in 210 games for Worcester, surpassing Riley Armstrong for 2nd all-time and was the Sharks iron man with 53 games played in a row before he was traded to New Jersey on Feb 8th. The late Tom Cavanagh holds the Sharks record with 216gp.

Sharks feast on Falcons... Worcester has a point in 15 straight games against the Springfield Falcons (13-0-2) and 21-2-2 in the last 25 games vs. the Falcons. Alex Stalock is 11-0-1 in 12 appearances against the Falcons.

Braun in NHL... Justin Braun made his NHL debut in Vancouver on Nov 26... Justin played 16:56 in the loss to the Canucks... Braun recorded two assists in his 2nd NHL game in a 4-3W in Edmonton on Nov 24 and was the #3 star with a +2 rating in 22:48 of action.... Braun has played in 15 games with San Jose (1-8-9) this season. His first NHL goal came in a 4-0 win in Ottawa against Pascal LeClaire on December 2. Justin Braun represented the Sharks at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic in Hershey and fired a 95.6mph shot in the hardest shot competition.

Sullivan Scores... Sharks defenseman Sean Sullivan already has 10 goals (2 GWG) this season from the Sharks blue line, good for 4th in the AHL. The 26-year-old from Boston, MA had 12 goals and 49 points in San Antonio last season. Sean ranks 4th on the Sharks with 24 points this season. Sullivan was featured on Sports Center as the #4 play of the top ten countdown for his hip check on Jason Pitton on Jan 22 (BRI): Watch HERE.

Defense Scoring... Sharks defensemen have scored 31 of the Sharks 137 goals this season, good for 22.6% of the Sharks goals scored this season.

Irwin scoring... Sharks rookie defenseman Matt Irwin has 9 goals and 11 assists from the Sharks blue line this season. The rookie from UMASS-Amherst has 8 goals in his last 32 games for the Sharks.

Give me Moore... #8 has played 166 games in a Worcester Sharks jersey (11th all-time) and has compiled 46 points (10-36-45) and 251 penalty minutes. His +31 is 4th best in Sharks history. He recorded his first professional two goal game on November 14 vs. Norfolk and was the #1 star. Moore scored his first NHL goal in his 2nd NHL game in a 4-3OTL in Colorado on November 17th. Mike scored at 9:14 of the 2nd period on a slap shot assisted by Dany Heatley on Peter Budaj to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead. He has also been the Sharks Man of the Year for the previous two seasons for his continued work in the Worcester community. Moore was named the 4th captain in Sharks history on Feb 11th before the Sharks defeated the Falcons 5-0 in Albany.

Who's your BF ... Sharks 2nd year forward Benn Ferriero started his sophomore campaign on FIRE with NINE goals through 10 games to lead the Worcester Sharks offensively. Benn has played 29 games with the San Jose Sharks and has five goals, four assists and +7. Ferriero is currently riding a four game point streak in the AHL (1-5-6).

Sheriff back in town... Frazer McLaren returned to Worcester on Nov 20 after beginning the season with the San Jose Sharks. Frazer has played in 143 games in a Worcester Sharks sweater accumulating 25 points (12-14-26) and 370 penalty minutes. McLaren ranks 3rd all time in penalty minutes by a Worcester Sharks player (Brennan Evans 381, and Brad Staubitz 462). The Sherriff missed 21 games due to a lower body injury before returning to the lineup on January 11 vs. Albany.

Sharks in the Atlantic... the Sharks have a 21-12-2-5 record against Atlantic Division prey this season.

Good when leading... the Sharks have a 14-2-0-1 when leading after the 1st period of play and a 19-0-0-1 when leading after the 2nd period of play this season.

Outshot but not outscored.... Worcester is 9-4-0-2 when they get outshot during a game.

Reunion of sorts...Jonathan Cheechoo returns to the Sharks organization in Worcester and will once again play for head coach Roy Sommer.... Coach Sommer coached Cheechoo in Kentucky and Cleveland in the AHL before his NHL days. Before this season, Cheechoo had 56-63-119pts in 137 games under Coach Sommer. "Cheech" ranks 1st in Worcester with 41 points (14-27-41) in 47 games this season.

Familiar Faces...21 players returned to the 2010-11 roster from the regular season Atlantic Division championship team including four 20 goal scorers (DaSilva, Mashinter, Trevelyan, and Zalewski) and team MVP Alex Stalock.

56... The Sharks allowed a franchise record 56 shots on goal in Norfolk on Saturday, October 16th in a 7-2 loss to the Admirals... the previous high for most shots allowed in a game was on April 6, 2007 when the Sharks allowed 52 shots in a 4-1 win over the Wolf Pack at the DCU Center.

24... The Sharks tied a franchise record with 24 shots in the first period vs. the Sound Tigers on January 28. Worcester fired a season high 48 shots in the 3-2 victory.

47... Carter Hutton made 47 saves in his Sharks debut on Saturday, October 16th in Norfolk.

Nice Start... Carter Hutton made his first start of the season on Sunday, October 31st in Providence and made 37 saves to pick up the victory in a 6-1 win over the Bruins.

Great Start... goaltender Daren Machesney became the first player in franchise history to post a shutout in his first start for Worcester. Machesney made 25 saves in a 5-0 win at Springfield on February 11.

San Jose to Worcester... Sharks rookie netminder Carter Hutton picked up his first professional shutout vs. the Bruins on February 5. (20 saves). Earlier in the day in Boston, he served as the backup goaltender for the San Jose Sharks in their 2-0 victory in Boston.

Déjà vu... the Sharks franchise picked up identical 2-0 victories over the Bruins franchise on February 5th. In the afternoon, San Jose shutout Boston 2-0 behind a goal by Logan Couture, an empty netter by Devin Setoguchi, and 26 saves by Antti Niemi. At night, Worcester defeated Providence 2-0 in Worcester behind a goal by Joe Loprieno, an empty netter by Brandon Mashinter, and 20 saves by Carter Hutton.

Young Guns... the Sharks have dressed 13 rookies, including three from UMASS-Amherst (Braun, Irwin, and Marcou) and two from UMASS-Lowell (Hutton and Schaus).

Vets... Two veterans will provide leadership for the Sharks squad this season, which include: former Maurice Richard winner Jonathan Cheechoo and the leading goal scorer for the Sharks from last season, T.J. Trevelyan.

Super Sunday... the Sharks are 8-3-0-2 on Sunday afternoon games this season... including a 6-1-0-2 record at the DCU Center.

Home/Away goals... the Sharks have scored 70 goals at home (26 games) and allowed 72 at the DCU Center.... while scoring 67 goals (25 games) on the road and allowing 76 goals on the road.

Good Starts... Worcester has outscored their opponents 45-35 (+10) in the first period, 44-42 (+2) in the 2nd period, but outscored 43-63 (-20) in the third period.

Cam MacIntyre scored his first professional in his first professional game vs. Portland on December 5... Nick Schaus scored his first professional goal, the game winner vs. Portland on December 5.

Back-to-back Shutouts... the Sharks posted back-to-back shutouts in franchise history with a 2-0 blanking of the Bruins on Feb 5th (Hutton 20 saves) and a 5-0 whitewash of the Falcons in Springfield on Feb 11th (Machesney 25 saves).

Shutout streak.... The Sharks are riding a shutout streak of 137:02 with the Monarchs Jon Zeiler scoring the last goal against the Sharks at 7:58 of the 3rd period past Alex Stalock in the Sharks 4-3SOW over Manchester on Feb 4.

Streakers... the Sharks have won a season high five straight games and have a point in six straight (5-0-1)... Benn Ferriero has a four game point streak (1-5-6)...Justin Braun (0-3-3) and Brandon Mashinter (2-2-4) each have a three game point streak...

Stole it from Bill Ballou... The Sharks are 9-5-0-0 when there two referees calling penalties... Worcester did not have a single power play in their 4-3W over Springfield on Nov 21 - it marked the first time in 337 regular season games the Sharks did not have a power play chance.

Special Teams of late... The Sharks outscored their opponents 17-8 in special teams in the first 13 games; BUT have been outscored 37-24 in the last 38 games. The Sharks power play is just 16-for-119 (13.4%) in their last 28 games.

Through the years... the Sharks finished 2010 with a 45-25-10 record.... Followed by a 45-31-4 record in 2009, a 35-41-7 record in 2008, and a 41-27-10 record in 2007.

I like Bridgeport... Sharks forward Cory Quirk has scored twice this season with both tallies coming in Bridgeport. "Quirky" has ten goals in a Sharks sweater with 6 of them coming against the Sound Tigers.

Score in Game #1... David Marshall became the 9th Sharks player to score in his Sharks debut on December 18 at Bridgeport. (Cheechoo, Darche, Spang, Pavelski, Raduns, Larose, Lucia, MacIntyre)

Crazed Rat grabs 30... with his game winning goal on Nov 21st vs. the Falcons, Andrew Desjardins became the 9th player in franchise history to score 30 goals. Desjardins skated in his 200th game as a Shark on February 5 vs. the Bruins and picked up a fighting major.

Plus Players... Andrew Desjardins ranks 1st in franchise history with a +48 rating while line mate and fellow Crazed Rat Dan DaSilva is +47.

Massachusetts... The Sharks have FOUR players born and raised in Massachusetts (Sean Sullivan - Boston, Cory Quirk - Brockton, Benn Ferriero - Essex, John McCarthy - Andover) In all; the Sharks have 14 American born players and 13 Canadians.

NHL Experience... the Sharks dressed 12 players with NHL experience on Jan 28-29 in back-to-back victories at home over the Sound Tigers and the Bruins on Feb 4-5th.

Original Crazed Rat back... forward John McCarthy returned to Worcester on January 28 after beginning the season in San Jose. One of the original crazed rats, McCarthy has played in 30 games with San Jose this season (2-2-4).

Packing them in... the Sharks drew 33,593 fans during the six game home stand which concluded on February 5 at the DCU Center (average of 5,599). The Sharks 7,273 attendance on Jan 29 pushed them over the 750,000 mark in four + seasons in Worcester.

All 5 years... Jamie McGinn became the first player in Worcester Sharks history to dress in at least one game in the first five seasons with the Worcester Sharks when he played on January 28 vs. the Sound Tigers. The 22-year-old forward from Fergus, Ontario has played in 91 games for Worcester (29-28-57) and 71 penalty minutes.

Breaking down the scoring... The Sharks have scored 137 goals this season... 37 on the power play, 88 even strength goals, 3 shorthanded tallies, 4 shootout goals, and 3 empty net goals.

Goals for Petrecki... 2nd year defenseman Nick Petrecki has 7 points (3-4-7) and 86 penalty minutes in 39 games for the Sharks this season....His two game winners rank 3rd in the AHL among defensemen.... Nick has 8 fighting majors to lead the Sharks....The 21-year-old from Schenectady, NY had 14 points last season (2-12-14) with the Sharks.

Loprieno the forward... D-Man Joe Loprieno has played forward in nine games for the Sharks this season and scored his first pro goal in the first period vs. Charlotte on Nov 27.

Special Teams... Worcester ranks 25th in the AHL on the PK at 79.4% (39-for-189) and 21st in the AHL on the power play with a 16.7% conversion rating (37-for-222). The Sharks have scored 3 shorthanded goals and have allowed 10 shorthanded tallies.

16-0... Worcester outshot the Sound Tigers 16-0 in the 2nd period on December 12 at the DCU Center... it was the first time all season an AHL team did not fire a shot in a period.

Henderson surpasses... Sharks 2nd year forward Kevin Henderson has 4 goals and 8 assists this season and is +10 through 48 games this season. The 24-year-old from Toronto, ONT had 15 points (2-13-15) in 64 games last season.

Good Sharks!... The Sharks rank 22nd in the AHL with just 15.78 penalty minutes per game.

Bad Sharks!... The Sharks and Whale combined for 138 penalty minutes (WOR 47, CT 91) on December 4 at CT, with 124 penalty minutes in the 2nd period alone (10 majors,7 minors, 2 misconducts, and 4 game misconducts).

Follow the AHL leaders.... Alex Stalock ranks 4th with 19 wins, 3rd with 1025 saves, and 2nd in minutes played with 2397... Sean Sullivan is 4th among AHL defensemen with 10 goals.

Stalock the stopper... Alex Stalock grabbed his 50th professional win vs. Portland on December 5....He has allowed just 64 goals in his last 29 games (2.20 goals against per game) after allowing 25 goals in his first 7 games.... Alex ranks 1st in the AHL with 2397 minutes played and 2nd in saves with 1025. Stalock is a perfect 4-for-4 stopping penalty shots, including two this season (the Bruins Roussel on Oct 23 and the Monarchs Elkins on Dec 19). Stalock left the game injured on February 4th vs. Manchester and his return is uncertain.

Al in the NHL... Alex Stalock made his NHL debut in San Jose on Tuesday, Feb 1. Stalock came in relief of Niemi down 3-0 midway through the 2nd period vs. Phoenix. Stalock made 9 saves and got the victory in a wild come from behind 5-3 win over the Coyotes.

Alex Stalock hits 100 games.... Stalock became just the 2nd Sharks goaltender to dress in 100 games on January 28 joining Thomas Greiss... Alex is 57-36-6 for the Sharks in those 100 games.

Mr. Dependable.... Andrew Desjardins had dressed in 188 straight games for Worcester breaking the record held by Derek Joslin (114 games).... Desjardins had the 2nd longest streak in the AHL (Nick Dodge in Charlotte) before his first NHL recall on January 2, 2011.

Monster Mash... Sharks power forward Brandon Mashinter received his first NHL recall on December 29, 2010. Mash made his NHL debut on December 29th in Minnesota (13 shifts and 7:17 of ice) in the Sharks 5-3 loss. Brandon has played 10 games in San Jose this season with no points and two fighting majors during his first NHL recall. Mash is currently back with Worcester.

Five for fighting...The Sharks have 60 fighting majors this season good for 11th in the AHL... 18 different players have dropped the mitts this season for the Sharks (Garet Hunt 3, Brandon Mashinter 8, Sean Sullivan 2, Jay Leach 5, Nick Petrecki 8, Andrew Desjardins 6, Dan DaSilva 4, Jason Pitton 1, Joe Loprieno 2, Kevin Henderson 3, David Marshall 1, Erick Lizon 3, Mike Moore 3. Cam MacIntyre 3, Tommy Wingels 1, Chris Lawrence 1, Frazer McLaren 4, and Ryan Del Monte 1). Logan Couture (24-12-36) has ripped it up in his first full season in San Jose. Logan is 1st on the team with 24 goals and 8 game winning goals. Former Worcester Sharks; Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi, Torrey Mitchell, and John McCarthy have all scored goals for San Jose. Derek Joslin has four points (1-3-4) in 17 games.
