LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
At Springfield (2/12): Center Justin Azevedo, left wing Bud Holloway and goaltender Jonathan Bernier led the Manchester Monarchs over the Springfield Falcons, 4-1, at the MassMutual Center on Friday night. Along with two goals by Azevedo, right wing Kevin Westgarth and defenseman David Kolomatis lit the lamp for the Monarchs. Left wing Charles Linglet was the lone Falcon to score. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (22-13-5) earned his 22nd win of the season with 33 saves on 34 shots. Falcons netminder Devan Dubnyk (11-14-1) took his 14th loss of the season with 17 saves. Manchester was 2-for-8 on the power play. Springfield was 0-for-8 with the man advantage.
Vs. Syracuse (2/13): Center Corey Elkins scored his team leading 17th goal which led the Manchester Monarchs over the Syracuse Crunch, 2-0, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. Left wing Dwight King added an insurance empty net goal for the Monarchs. Manchester goaltender Jonathan Bernier (23-13-5) earned his 23rd win of the season saving all 34 shots he faced for his seventh shutout of the season. Crunch netminder Kevin Lalande (16-13-2) took his 13th loss of the season with 22 saves on 23 shots. Manchester was 0-for-2 on the power play. Syracuse was also 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Vs. Worcester (2/14): Right wing Dan DaSilva recorded a hat trick to lead the Worcester Sharks to a 5-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs on Valentine's Day at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs picked up tallies by defenseman Alec Martinez and right wing Jon Rheault. The Sharks took the win and first place in the Atlantic Division with goals by DaSilva (three), left wing Frazer McLaren and left wing T.J. Trevelyan. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (23-14-5), playing his third game in as many nights, took his 14th loss of the season, stopping 32 out of 36 shots. Sharks netminder Alexander Stalock (29-12-1) recorded his league-leading 29th win of the season, making 33 saves on 35 shots. Manchester was 0-for-3 on the power play. Worcester was also 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (31-18-2-5, 69 points) dropped back down to second place in the Atlantic Division with a 5-2 loss to the Worcester Sharks (33-16-2-2, 70 points) on Sunday afternoon.
The Atlantic Division standings are tight with the top four teams only separated by six points.
The Monarchs are 18-7-0-2 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season.
Manchester ended their longest losing streak of the season, a three-game losing streak from February 2 - 6, with Friday's 4-1 win over Springfield.
The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked second in the AHL. They have given up 28 goals in 232 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.
Their power play is ranked sixth in the league with 42 goals on 216 opportunities with the man advantage.
Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 42-of-56 games thus far this season.
The Monarchs are 16-1-0-0 when scoring the first goal on home ice.
Left wing Bud Holloway (15-22=37) leads the Monarchs in both assists (22) and points (37).
Holloway is tied for sixth in the AHL with five game-winning-goals this season.
Holloway has recorded seven points (1-6=7) in his last four games.
Center Corey Elkins (17-19=36) ranks second on Manchester's roster with 36 points.
Elkins four-game scoreless streak ended with his team leading 17th goal of the season in Saturday's 2-0 win over Syracuse.
Center Gabe Gauthier (8-20=28), currently out with a lower body injury, ranks second on the squad with 20 assists and sits in third place 28 points.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (8-16$) leads Monarchs blueliners and ranks fourth overall on the team with 24 points. He has been held off the scoreboard in his last 12 games.
Right wing Scott Parse (3-10=13) joins the Monarchs from the Los Angeles Kings for the NHL's Olympic break. In just 11 games with Manchester this season, he leads the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-11. Defenseman Drew Bagnall (2-6=8) is close behind with a plus-10.
Parse joined the Monarchs for Saturday's 2-0 win over Syracuse but is ineligible to play again until Wednesday, February 24.
Center Justin Azevedo (6-8=14) has recorded eight points (4-4=8) in eight games since returning from a lower body injury that he suffered on November 18.
Right wing Kevin Westgarth's three-game point streak (1-2=3) came to an end on Saturday.
Westgarth's career-high 20 points (9-11=20) have moved him into fifth place on the Monarchs roster.
Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 23-14-5 in 43 games of the season. His 23 wins are tied for second in the AHL.
Bernier's seven shutouts lead the AHL.
Bernier is ranked third in the league with a 1.98 goals-against-average and is ranked second with a.939 save percentage.
Netminder Jeff Zatkoff has played in 15 games for the Monarchs this season, recording an 8-6-0 record, a 2.62 goals-against-average, a.926 save percentage and two shutouts.
