Admirals Set Their Sights On Second Place

NORFOLK, Va. - Winners of ten of their last 13 games, the Norfolk Admirals will look to close in on second place in the American Hockey League's East Division with four games this week.

The Admirals concluded a six-game homestand by winning all three games at Scope last week. On Wednesday, Justin Keller netted a hat trick to help the Admirals defeat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-3. On Friday, Jaroslav Janus turned aside all 24 shots he faced for his first professional shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Lowell Devils. In the Saturday rematch, captain Ryan Craig had two goals and an assist to propel the Admirals past the Devils 5-1.

The Admirals, who are just four points back of the second-place Albany River Rats in the East Division standings, have a critical game against the River Rats at 5:00 this evening in Albany. They will then travel to Hartford on Wednesday before returning to Scope on Friday and Saturday to face off against the Springfield Falcons. Following those two games, the Admirals hit the road for a five-game trip. On Friday night, the Admirals will induct Dennis McEwen and Rick Kowalsky into the Admirals Hall of Fame. On Saturday, discounted fundraising tickets are available for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Night. Also on Saturday, the Admirals will hold the final post-game skate of the 2009-10 season.

*EAST DIVISION STANDINGS*

At 27-24-3-1 (58 points), the Admirals are in third place in the American Hockey League's East Division. The East is led by the Hershey Bears (41-10-0-2, 84 pts). The Admirals trail the Albany River Rats (28-20-3-3, 62 pts) by just four points for second place. The Admirals lead the fourth-place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (26-26-1-1, 54 pts) by four points. The Adirondack Phantoms (24-25-2-2) and Syracuse Crunch (23-25-3-3) are tied for fifth place with 52 points. The Binghamton Senators (22-24-3-2, 49 pts) round out the division.

*ADMIRALS' LOG*

- Norfolk has won ten of its last 13 games (10-1-1-1, 22 points,.846) to climb from seventh to third place in the AHL's East Division. Eight of the games were decided by one goal (6-0-1-1) and two others were decided by two goals with an empty-net goal added at the end of the game (2-0-0-0).

- The Admirals are averaging 3.00 goals scored per game, 2.15 goals against per game, 14.3% on the power play and 91.7% on the penalty kill in their past 13 games.

- Prior to that stretch, the Admirals were averaging 2.50 goals scored per game, 2.86 goals against per game, 12.5% on the power play and 86.2% on the penalty kill in their first 42 games.

- Following a pair of road games early this week, the Admirals play fourteen of their final 23 games at Norfolk Scope Arena.

- There are four former Admirals competing in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games: Canadian defensemen Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook, Finnish defenseman Lasse Kukkonen and Latvian forward Martins Karsums.

- 2006 Team USA Olympian Mark Parrish was signed to an NHL contract by the Tampa Bay Lightning last week and made his Lightning debut yesterday at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers playing on a line with Vincent Lecavalier and Ryan Malone. He was returned to the Admirals earlier today.

- Parrish has points in ten of his last 15 games for the Admirals (4G, 8A).

- The Admirals shut down the second-ranked power play in the American Hockey League, leaving Lowell 0-14 on power play against Norfolk in the four-game season series. The Admirals won the season series 3-1-0-0, outscoring the Devils by a combined 10-3 score.

- With a pair of goals on Saturday night, captain Ryan Craig tied Brandon Bochenski for the team lead with 16 goals.

- With an assist on Saturday night, Ty Wishart took over the team lead with 17 assists.

- With a power play goal on Saturday night, Juraj Simek tied Brandon Bochenski for the team lead with six power play goals.

- Jaroslav Janus has won three straight games, allowing only three goals in that span for a 0.99 goals-against average and.963 save percentage.

- Janus has also won five of his last six games (5-1-0, 1.81,.929) and his only loss in that span came in overtime.

- Janus' first professional shutout came in his tenth professional game on Friday versus Lowell, as he turned aside all 24 Devils shots.

- Norfolk now has four shutouts on the season - the most since the 2004-05 season when Michael Leighton (7), Craig Anderson (2) and Adam Munro (4) combined for a franchise-record 13 shutouts

- Justin Keller registered his first professional hat trick on Wednesday versus Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

- Keller's point streak ended at five games (5G, 3A) on Saturday night.

- Juraj Simek has points in four straight games (3G, 2A) and goals in three straight games (3G).

- Ty Wishart has points in nine of his last 15 games (3G, 10A) and is now tied for 25th in AHL scoring among defensemen with 24 points (7G, 17A) in 54 games. Last season, Wishart had just seven points (1G, 6A) in 61 games.

- Matt Fornataro has points in three straight (2G, 1A) and ten of his last 13 games (7G, 4A).

Rookie goaltender Jaroslav Janus put together spectacular back-to-back starts last weekend to help the Admirals earn a sweep of the Lowell Devils at Norfolk Scope Arena. On Friday night, he turned aside all 24 shots he faced and helped the Admirals quell six chances by the AHL's #2 power play in a 3-0 win over Lowell. On Saturday, he stopped 26 of 27 shots as Norfolk claimed the season series over the Devils (3-1-0-0) with a 5-1 win.

Janus improved his season record to 5-6-0 with a 2.01 goals-against average and.925 save percentage. The pro rookie has won three straight games, allowing only three goals in that span for a 0.99 goals-against average and.963 save percentage. He has also won five of his last six games (5-1-0, 1.81,.929) and his only loss in that span came in overtime.

*SCOUTING REPORT*

The Albany River Rats sit just four points in front of the Admirals for second place in the AHL's East Division. The River Rats have won three of the four meetings between the clubs this season. However, the teams have not met since November 28 at Scope. Jerome Samson (21G, 22A) leads the River Rats with 43 points in 52 games. Justin Peters (18-13-2, 2.55,.916) and Mike Murphy (10-9-0, 2.81,.917) have split time in net this season for the Carolina Hurricanes' top affiliate. Albany is winless in five of its last seven games (2-4-1-0) but shut out the Binghamton Senators 7-0 in their last game on Saturday at home.

Norfolk plays the Hartford Wolf Pack for the final time this season on Wednesday in Connecticut. The Admirals lead the season series 2-1-0-0. The Wolf Pack currently are in a three-way tie for the fifth spot in the hotly-contested Atlantic Division with a 25-22-3-4 record and 57 points. Corey Locke (21G, 41A) leads the Wolf Pack and ranks third in the American Hockey League with 62 points. He also leads the AHL with 14 power play goals. Chad Johnson (14-9-2, 2.33,.920), Matt Zaba (5-8-1, 3.03,.905) and Miikka Wiikman (2-3-0, 4.15,.865) are manning the pipes for the Wolf Pack at this time. Former Admiral Pierre Parenteau (13G, 19A) ranks fourth on the Wolf Pack with 32 points but has not played since January 17 due to injury. Hartford has lost nine of its last 11 games (2-7-2-0) including a loss at Portland today. They do not play tomorrow before hosting Norfolk on Wednesday.

The Admirals and Springfield Falcons face off for the final two times in 2009-10 on Friday and Saturday at Scope in the Admirals' last home games before a five-game road trip. Both teams have a victory in the season series with the Falcons taking a 3-2 overtime decision in the last matchup on January 29 in Massachusetts. At 18-29-9-2, the Falcons round out the Atlantic Division in eighth place with 47 points. Left wing Charles Linglet (14G, 42A) leads Springfield with 56 points in 58 games this season and ranks third in the AHL in assists. Right wing Colton Fretter leads the Falcons with 22 goals. Devan Dubnyk (11-15-1, 3.13,.910) and Jean-Philippe Levasseur (6-12-0, 3.44,.898) tend the nets for the Falcons. The Falcons have lost six of their last eight games (2-6-0-0) but shut out the Sound Tigers in Bridgeport on Sunday evening. They will host Worcester tomorrow night before traveling to Virginia for Friday and Saturday's games.
