
Pirates Power Past Wolf Pack For Ninth Straight Win

Portland, Maine - Kyle Wanvig scored twice and added two assists to lead the Portland Pirates to a 7-4 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon in front of 4,433 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
The win was the Pirates ninth consecutive victory, the second longest winning streak in franchise history. The team record is 10 games established in 1996-97. The win was also the Pirates seventh straight on home ice, only one shy of matching the franchise record for consecutive home victories done twice previously.
Tyler Ennis added a goal and two assists for the Pirates, now 30-16-5-2 on the season, while Jeff Cowan, Travis Turnbull and Felix Schutz all collected a goal and an assist. Cody McCormick rounded out the scoring.
Nigel Williams, Kenny Roche, Dane Byers and Derek Couture scored for the Wolf Pack, who suffered their third straight loss to drop to 25-23-3-3 on the year.
The Pirates got off to a lightning quick start in the game by scoring three goals in the opening five-and-a-half minutes. Turnbull started the explosion 53 seconds into the contest followed shortly thereafter by goals by Schutz and McCormick that chased Hartford starter Chad Johnson, who allowed three goals on four shots. Williams made it a two-goal game early in the second but the Pirates answered with goals by Cowan, Ennis and Wanvig (with his first of the game) to put the home side ahead 6-1. Roche and Wanvig completed the second period scoring leaving Portland in the lead 7-2 after two. Byers and Couture scored for the Wolf Pack in the third to complete the scoring.
The Pirates out shot the Wolf pack 32-30 in the game as Jhonas Enroth posted the victory.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three stars of the game were all from the Pirates. Wanvig was the first, Cowan the second and defenseman Mike Kostka the third.
The Pirates hit the road for their next three games beginning Friday at 7 p.m. in Albany against the River Rats. Saturday and Sunday it's a pair of games against the Rochester Americans at 7:05 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. All three games can be heard live on News Talk WLOB 95.5 and on-line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
The next Pirates home game takes place Tuesday, February 23rd when the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins visit for a 7 p.m. start. It's two-for-Tuesday presented by WBLM and WCYY as fans can purchase two tickets for $22. It's also Sun Tan City Ladies Night.
