
Monarchs Sign Murphy And Schmidt

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, have signed right wing Ryan Murphy and defenseman Bryan Schmidt to one-year contracts, Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough announced today. In addition, the Monarchs have signed forward Doug Christiansen to a professional tryout agreement.
Murphy, 23, played in 68 games with the Monarchs during the 2005-06 season, recording 14 points (7-7=14) and 34 penalty minutes. The 5-foot-11, 183-pound native of Rumson, New Jersey, registered 59 points (25-34=59) in 156 games during his four year collegiate career at Boston College (2001-05) prior to joining the Monarchs at the end of the 2004-05 season.
Schmidt, 25, made his AHL debut with the Providence Bruins at the end of last season. In 15 games with the Bruins, the 6-foot-3, 209-pound native of Bloomington, Minnesota, collected four points (2-2=4) and 13 penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, Schmidt played four years at Merrimack College and tallied 90 points (34-56=90) in 114 games from 2002-06.
Christiansen, 28, spent time with Binghamton (one game), Bridgeport (five games) and Hershey (three games) of the AHL and 63 games with the ECHL's Reading Royals during the 2005-06 season. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, led the Royals with 35 goals and 64 points last season. Christiansen appeared in two games with the Monarchs during the 2004-05 season and collected seven penalty minutes.
