'Dogs win opener

HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs opened their 2006-2007 season with a 5-3 win over the Manitoba Moose at Copps Coliseum. ‘Dogs goaltender Yann Danis picked up the victory and became the franchise leader with 48 career wins, surpassing former netminder Steve Passmore.

The Moose opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Jesse Schultz at 2:13 of the first period.

The Bulldogs evened the score with a power-play goal of their own at 4:21 of the first frame by forward Duncan Milroy. Drawing assists on the goal were Kyle Chipchura and Danny Groulx.

Centre Brad Moran restored the lead for Manitoba at 11:04 of the first frame, making the score 2-1 with his second goal in as many games this season. The Bulldogs drew even with another first period power-play marker from Michael Lambert at 17:13.

In the second period, the teams traded goals. Manitoba took the lead for the third time in the game at the 10:29 mark with an unassisted goal from centre Rick Rypien. Then Johnathan Ferland replied for the ‘Dogs just 30 seconds later, tying the score 3-3.

The Bulldogs would take their first lead of the game when Zack Stortini scored the eventual game-winning goal at 7:32 of the third period. Kyle Chipchura recorded his second assist of the game on the go-ahead goal. Then with 11 seconds left in the game, Maxim Lapierre rounded out the scoring with an empty net goal.

Hamilton was 2-9 on the power play while Manitoba went 1-7 with the man advantage.

The Bulldogs next game is on Friday, October 13th versus the defending Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears.
