Monarchs Recall Chouinard

MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs, the AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, have recalled goaltender Mathieu Chouinard from their ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, and reassigned goaltender Terry Denike to the Royals from the Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League, Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough announced today. The Monarchs also announced that goaltender Milan Hnilicka will likely miss the Monarchs four games this week with a broken ring finger on his catching hand. Hnilicka's injury status is listed as day-to-day.

Chouinard, 23, was sent to Reading for a conditioning assignment on Thursday, November 20. The 6-foot-1, 211-pound native of Boisbriand, Quebec, injured his groin versus the Hartford Wolf Pack on October 25. Chouinard has appeared in seven games with the Monarchs this season, posting a 2-1-0 record, a 2.24 goals-against-average and a .913 save-percentage. While in Reading, he appeared in one game, earning a 6-2 win over the Las Vegas Wranglers on Saturday, November 22. In that game, he stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced and finished with a 2.00 goals-against-average and .931 save-percentage. The fourth-year pro has appeared in 79 career games with the Monarchs, the Binghamton Senators (AHL), the Grand Rapid Griffins (AHL) and the Peoria Rivermen (ECHL), recording a 44-22-2 record, a 2.44 goals-against-average and a .906 save-percentage.

Chouinard was originally selected by the Ottawa Senators in the first-round (15th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He re-entered the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and was again selected by Ottawa in the second-round (45th overall). He signed with the Los Angeles Kings as an unrestricted free agent on July 7, 2003.

Denike, 22, returns to Reading after a short stint with Wichita. The 6-foot-2, 194-pound native of Mississauga, Ontario, has played in two games with the Royals this season, posting an 0-1-0 record, a 5.28 goals-against-average and a ..861 save-percentage. He was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the fifth-round (152nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

The Monarchs (10-6-1-2) return to action tonight at 7:05 p.m. when they face the Hartford Wolf Pack at the Hartford Civic Center. The Monarchs and Wolf Pack (9-3-4-1) are currently tied for first place in the Atlantic division with 23 points. The Monarchs will then meet the Lowell Lock Monsters at the Tsongas Arena at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 28, before returning home for a 7:35 p.m. contest with the Providence Bruins on Saturday, November 29. The first 5,000 fans in attendance at Saturday's game will receive a free MAX mini-bobblehead doll, courtesy of Catholic Medical Center. The Monarchs will then close the weekend with a road game at the Centrum Centre against the Worcester IceCats at 4:05 p.m.
