The 21-year-old native of Kamloops, British Columbia enjoyed a four-year Major Junior "A" hockey career with the Western Hockey League's (WHL) Seattle Thunderbirds. He set career Major Junior "A" highs in goals (36), assists (27) and points (63) in his last year (2002-2003) with Seattle. He ranked second on the team in goals (T) and PIM (203).

In 2001-2002, Black ranked third on the Thunderbirds in goals (27) and PIM (205), while ranking fifth in points (45). He was a teammate of Rivermen Bret DeCecco and Craig Olynick from 1999-2001.
