In first game as a Moose on October 11, 2002, Smith fired the first goal of the Moose season at home against the Worcester IceCats. In 14 playoff games with Manitoba last year, he notched one goal and three assists plus 25 PIM. He scored the double-overtime winner in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarter-Final against the Providence Bruins. This will be Smith's first NHL recall to the Canucks in his career.
