Rosemont, Ill. - On the eve of Thanksgiving, the Grand Rapids Griffins (11-6-4-0) feasted on the Chicago Wolves on Friday night. Kory Karlander and Jiri Hudler each tallied a goal and an assist, while Marc Lamothe made 17 saves to shutout the Wolves (10-4-3-2) by a 3-0 score to assume first place in the West Division on Wednesday night.
The win extends Lamothe's personal winning streak to three games. Over the three-game span, he has stopped 66 of 68 shots for a save percentage of 0.971 and a goals against average of 0.67.
After a scoreless first period, Grand Rapids got on the board when Karlander tipped a centering pass from Niklas Kronwall for a power play marker at 6:01 of the second period. Hudler also assisted on the goal. The goal extends Karlander's point-scoring streak to four games and is the third game-winning goal for Karlander as a Griffin. Karlander has six points over the four-game span (3-3-6).
The Griffins would strike again when Danny Groulx threaded a pass up the middle of the ice to a streaking Hudler, sending him on a breakaway. Hudler tucked a shot in the top right corner at 7:57 of the middle frame. Karlander also assisted on the play. Hudler has at least one point in four of the last five games (1-4-5).
Hugo Boisvert capped the scoring for the Griffins when he banged in a rebound at 17:56 of the second period. Nathan Robinson and Anders Myrvold assisted on the power play tally. Robinson has one point in each of the last four games.
Rookie netminder Kari Lehtonen made 24 saves in a losing effort.
The rematch will be on Friday night at Van Andel Arena at 7:30.
