Manchester, N.H. - Kyle Smith's first professional goal and two power-play tallies propelled the Manchester Monarchs to a 3-1 victory over the Elmira Jackals on Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

The Monarchs (37-18-3-5) improved their season record against the Jackals (32-26-3-1) to 6-2-0-1, and now lead Elmira by 14 points in the East Division.

"It was nice to see our brand of hockey being played for the majority of the night," Head Coach, Rich Seeley, said. "The goal here is to win every minute of every period. We were able to do that for the majority of the night, and we got the result we were looking for."

The Monarchs opened the scoring at 9:24 in the first period when Smith scored his 1st goal of the season. Ryan Patsch fed Smith a pass from the left circle to the top of the crease, where Smith tipped the puck in, top shelf, over Jackals goaltender, C.J. Motte.

Joey Diamond extended the Monarchs lead with a power-play goal at 2:17 in the second period. Diamond chipped away at the rebound from a Maxim Kitsyn shot, and with Motte down on the ice, the puck broke loose and Diamond netted a backhand goal from a tight angle just to the right of the cage, scoring his 18th goal of the season.

The Monarchs struck again on the power play when Gasper Kopitar netted his 8th goal of the season at 3:57 in the second period. Kopitar sent Derek Arnold in clean on Motte, but the Jackals goaltender stopped the point-blank shot. The rebound, however, came right to the stick of Kopitar who was following the play, and Kopitar fired the puck into the yawning cage to give the Monarchs a 3-0 lead.

The Jackals finally broke through when Tyler Currier scored the lone goal for Elmira at 12:41 in the third period. Ian Young took a slap shot from the right point and Currier deflected the shot past Monarchs goaltender, Michael Houser, for his 19th goal of the season, bringing the score to 3-1.

Elmira pulled Motte for the final three minutes of the final frame, but the score remained the same despite heavy pressure in the Monarchs zone, thanks to multiple saves by Houser.

The Monarchs are back in action Friday night (7:05 p.m.), when they hit the road for the start of a two-game series with the Elmira Jackals at First Arena.
