Evansville IceMen News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - Goaltender P.J. Musico and the Quad City Mallards shut down a third period comeback effort from the Evansville IceMen in a 4-1 victory Sunday at the Ford Center. With the win, the Mallards extended their lead in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference to three points over Tulsa and eight points over Evansville.
The Mallards killed off the only penalty of the first period and scored the only goal of the frame shortly thereafter. Kevin Gibson threw a pass from the right point to the front of the net and Tanner Eberle deflected the puck past IceMen goaltender Christoffer Bengtsberg with 1:43 left in the frame. Evansville outshot Quad City 11-9 in the period, but trailed 1-0 at the first break.
Each team was penalized three times in the second period, but neither power play could find the back of the net. Late in the period, Kyle Follmer fired a wrist shot past Bengtsberg from the right circle to give the Mallards a 2-0 lead after two. Musico stopped all 22 shots in the first 40 minutes of play.
Andrew Himelson broke Musico's shutout 9:26 into the third period when he flung a shot to the net from the corner that went off of the Mallards' goalie and into the net. But Zach Pochiro blasted a one-timer under the crossbar from high in the slot with 6:47 to play to give Quad City a 3-1 lead. Matt Carey added an empty-netter with 2:49 left to make it 4-1. Musico stopped 33 shots for his second straight win and tenth of the season. Bengtsberg stopped 30 in the loss.
The IceMen stay home to host the Fort Wayne Komets on St. Patrick's Day Thursday at the Ford Center at 6:15pm. The ice will be dyed green celebrating the holiday and the contest will be the last meeting between the two rivals at the Ford Center. They'll meet twice more in Fort Wayne on March 26 and April 3.
