WORCESTER, MA - Center Tom Cavanagh scored the decisive goal as the Manchester Monarchs fell to the Worcester Sharks 2-1 at the DCU Center in front of 7,048 fans on Friday night.
Manchester (25-26-4-4) is in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 58 points. Worcester (26-26-4-3) is in sixth place in the Atlantic Division with 53 points.
A mere 3:35 into the third period, Cavanagh gave the Sharks the one goal advantage. Defenseman J.D. Forrest shot the puck from the right point and left wing Lukas Kaspar tipped the disk followed by a tip from Forrest that soared into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.
Following a scoreless first period, Monarchs defenseman Jeff Likens ripped a blistering slap shot from the top of the left face-off circle to give Manchester a 1-0 lead at 10:59 of the middle frame. On the power play, defenseman Patrik Hersley picked up the puck from center Marc-Andre Cliche and fed the puck over to Likens. The defenseman picked up the pass, found the lane and beat Sharks goaltender Thomas Greiss on the blocker side for his first goal of the season.
Sharks defenseman Derek Joslin evened the score at 1-1 at 17:23 of the second period with a power play goal. Similar to the Monarchs goal, Joslin collected the puck at the right point and fired a slap shot past Manchester goaltender Jonathan Quick's blocker for his seventh goal of the season. Center Mike Iggulden and Forrest earned assists on the tying goal.
Quick took the loss for the Monarchs with 15 saves on 17 shots. Greiss earned the win with 28 saves.
